COLUMBIANA CORNER Inmates lend a hand with real estate tax bills

Monday, January 7, 2002

Columbiana County Treasurer Linda Bolon is enlisting county jail inmates in an effort to get real estate tax bills mailed.
Prisoners aren't actually handling the bills themselves, Bolon said. They are assisting by stuffing the mailing envelopes for the bills with return envelopes.
Uniformed inmates are often seen in and around the courthouse, performing maintenance chores and even putting up the 2001 courthouse Christmas tree.
Only nonviolent prisoners are allowed out of the jail, located in Center Township, to work.
City manager: In his fourth month as East Palestine city manager, Gary Clark said he is enjoying the job change. Clark, who was East Palestine police chief for 25 years, is excited about 2002, saying the city is poised for growth and there are numerous projects planned. He thinks he left the police department in good shape and in good hands, and says he will work with Fire Chief Merle Stewart to find a qualified candidate to replace Stewart, who plans to retire in October.
"It's a fun job," Clark said.
