Sports and recreation day scheduled April 20
A men's and women's outdoor sports and recreational day will be held April 20, at the Bieber Farm, 2301 West Western Reserve Road, Canfield.
Registration and a continental breakfast will be at 7:30 a.m. with the event running from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
There will be a workshop fee of $45 which includes use of all equipment in courses, binder of handouts from all courses, gift, continental breakfast, lunch and door prizes.
Courses will include duck identification and retrieval, basic shotgun, advanced handgun, Fishing, hand gun types/safety, archery, rope/knot tying, trapping, turkey calling/hunting, photography, first aide and survival, trophy scoring, camp set-up, outdoor cooking, topographical map and compass.
The event is being presented by Safari Club International, East Ohio - North West Penn Chapter.

RIGHTS
Legislation urged
The U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance, the nation's leading sportsmen's advocacy organization unveiled a new plan recently to help fight animal and environmental rights terrorism.
USSA, formerly the Wildlife Legislative Fund of America, is launching this effort to pass new legislation across the fifty states to recognize and penalize these types of acts.
The FBI now calls two of the most radical groups, the Earth Liberation Front and associated Animal Liberation Front, the most active domestic terrorism organizations.
In addition, the model legislation developed will help law enforcement officials identify some of the animal rights organizations that may have been providing assistance to these radical underground groups.

PENNSYLVANIA
Executive named
Rickalon L. "Rick" Hoopes has been named as Director of the Bureau of Fisheries for the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission . Hoopes, who first worked for the Commission as a college student in the summer of 1968, has more than 30 years of experience in managing Pennsylvania's fisheries.
Hoopes becomes the second director of the Bureau of Fisheries, which was established in 1987 as part of a reorganization of the Commission staff. He replaces longtime bureau director Del Graff, who retired on Jan. 18 after 38 years of outstanding service with the PFBC.
Prior to his appointment as Director of the Bureau of Fisheries, Hoopes served as the Chief of the Division of Research for the Commission since 1992.
FISHING
Bassmaster University
The Citgo Bassmaster University will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 9 and 10 at the Cleveland Airport Marriott.
Bass angling pros on tap this year will include Jimmy Houston, Larry Nixon, Mark Davis, Terry Baksay, Mike Auten, and Danny Joe Humphrey.
The course is $99 for adults and $50 for youths under 16 with a paid adult attendee.

Tournament trail set
The 2002 Lakes Tournament Trail will get started April 21 on Tappan Reservoir.
A pre-season meeting is being held at 1 p.m. today at the Clinton Village hall, about five miles south of Barberton. More information is available at the tournament website, www.geocities.com/lakestrail.
Other tournament sites include West Branch Reservoir May 11, Berlin Reservoir June 23 and Aug. 11, Mosquito Reservoir July 14 and Portage Lakes Sept. 7.

HUNTING
Turkey training
Gander Mountain will host a Turkey University at its Niles store from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 9.
Speakers for the day include the Thundering Toms of Trumbull County Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, John Pflueger of Quaker Boy Turkey Calls, Brian Banbury from the Ohio Division of Wildlife, Eric Dunn, gunsmith for Gander Mountain, as well as hunter education instructors and local taxidermists.
Activities will include a turkey calling contest at noon, turkey frying demonstrations and a turkey hunting education course (pre-registration required for the course, call 330-544-5800).
