Authorities check report of gun threats

Wednesday, February 20, 2002

YOUNGSTOWN -- A girl who was to return to Kirkmere Elementary School today after a suspension allegedly made threats that she was going to bring a gun to the West Side school and shoot six pupils.
School security officer Ted Terlesky said that the girl would not be permitted to attend class today and that she and her parents would meet with board of education and city police investigators instead.
"We take it very seriously," Terlesky said.
City police were called Tuesday afternoon to the home of an 11-year-old schoolmate of the girl, who told police that she had received a phone call about the threat from a third girl.
The 11-year-old told police that the threat was made against her and five other Kirkmere pupils. The girl who made the threat said she was going to bring a gun to school because she had been suspended about two weeks ago for drinking alcohol on the way to school, the 11-year-old told police.
Terlesky said he and city police officers investigated the threat Tuesday night. He said the girl would likely receive discipline at the school level.
