ATV accident
MERCER Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police said Matthew C. Ahr, 13, of Carlton in northeastern Mercer County was seriously hurt when the All-Terrain Vehicle he was riding was in an accident with another ATV in French Creek Township.
Police said Ahr and Chad M. Beach, 15, also of Carlton, were riding west in the eastbound lane of Route 322 around 3 p.m. Saturday when Beach slowed to make a left turn off the road and Ahr's ATV struck his vehicle from behind.
The impact threw Ahr to the ground. Police said he was taken to Meadville Medical Center, but the hospital reported today that he wasn't treated there.
Strickland's bid
YOUNGSTOWN -- U.S. Rep. Ted Strickland, a Lucasville Democrat, will formally announce his re-election bid at three stops Wednesday in the new 6th Congressional District.
Strickland will appear at the Mahoning County Courthouse at 5 p.m. after stops at the Jefferson County Courthouse and the Steelworkers Union Hall in St. Clairsville.
The new 12-county district includes Columbiana and all but the northeast portion of Mahoning County.
Rep. Sawyer cancels
POLAND -- U.S. Rep. Thomas C. Sawyer, an Akron Democrat running for re-election to Congress, has canceled his appearance Tuesday at the Democrats of the 17th District meeting because of a scheduling conflict.
Dan Lucas, his chief of staff, will attend.
The meeting is at 7:30 p.m. in the Poland Community Baseball Association hall on Sheridan Road and is open to the public.
Girl is assaulted
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 16-year-old East Side girl reported to police that a stranger assaulted her after forcing her into his vehicle.
The teen said she was standing near the WRTA bus station on Federal Street about 2 p.m. Friday when a man driving a blue truck with orange lights on top pulled up to the curb and forced her inside.
The man asked if she would have sex with him for money and threatened to jump on her when she refused.
The teen jumped out of the truck as the man was struggling with her, tearing her shirt.
Crash injures woman
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A Slippery Rock, Pa., woman was treated at Jameson Memorial Hospital after a crash on Pa. Route 108.
Pennsylvania State Police said Sandra DiTommaso of Mourning Dove Drive lost control of her minivan about 7:30 a.m. Sunday near Brown Road in Scott Township.
The vehicle spun and crossed into an oncoming lane of traffic, crashing into a car driven by Tamara K. Hufnagel of West Liberty Road, Slippery Rock.
Hufnagel's car slid off the road, rolled down an embankment and came to rest on its roof. Hufnagel was treated for a fractured foot and shoulder injury. DiTommaso was not injured.
New Castle car fires
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police are investigating two car fires on Vosler Road, Scott Township.
A 1985 Buick Sedan and a 1990 Chevrolet Lumina Van were destroyed at 4:10 a.m. Sunday at the home of one of the vehicle's owners. The fires are under investigation.
Arraignment set
CANFIELD -- A Salem man will be arraigned Wednesday in Mahoning County Court on charges of burglary, receiving stolen property, obstructing official business, possession of criminal tools and drug abuse.
He was arrested around 10:30 p.m. Friday in the woods near apartments in the 400 block of Fairground Boulevard.
A witness saw the man leaving an apartment and called police.
Officers caught the man at the rear of an office complex on Manor Hill Drive.
He had stolen jewelry and crack cocaine in his possession when arrested, police said.
He was driving a truck that was reported stolen in Boardman earlier this month.
