Tax bills delayed
YOUNGSTOWN -- A computer error caused a two-day delay in distribution of property tax bills in Mahoning County. Treasurer John Reardon said the delay was not enough to force extension of the March 8 due date for the first-half 2001 taxes. Only "a very small portion" of the total 160,000 tax bills was affected, he said.
While reviewing bills before they were mailed last week, Reardon said he noticed that information about how tax revenue is distributed was incorrect. The actual tax totals, however, were correct. The problem was caught early in the printing cycle and the incorrect bills were reprinted with correct information.
Reardon said he did not know how many incorrect bills had actually gone into the mail.
Looking for DUIs
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning County Sheriff's Department will conduct a "DUI Blitz" near the intersection of Mahoning and Meridian avenues. Maj. Michael Budd said 18 deputies will target drivers suspected of driving under the influence, speeding and failing to wear seat belts from 10 tonight to 4 a.m. Saturday.
Monopoly game
BOARDMAN -- The Northeast Ohio Council of Camp Fire USA sponsors a fund-raising Monopoly game tournament from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 23 in the J.C. Penney Concourse of Southern Park Mall.
The council hopes to raise $7,000 from the tournament, which will include two 90-minute preliminary rounds and a final round featuring the top eight players. Seats are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Those interested in participating should call (888) 533-4426 to register.
