Car search arrest
YOUNGSTOWN -- An Austintown resident who failed to use a turn signal while driving a 1988 Lincoln Town Car on the city's South Side now faces charges of receiving stolen property and having criminal tools.
The 34-year-old Compass West resident was pulled over near Southern Boulevard and Lucius Avenue and issued a traffic citation when he gave officers permission to search the car. Officers had requested the search upon realizing the vehicle matched a description of one suspected of being involved in several burglaries.
Officers found a power washer and torches that had been stolen from Top Gun Detailing at 604 Marshall St. on Saturday after a vehicle had rammed through a garage door there.
A 35-year-old male passenger in the car, of Rockdale Avenue in Boardman, was arrested on a charge of receiving stolen property.
The driver told police the car was not his but was driven by an employee of the detail shop. The shop's owner told police the men arrested were friends of the employee.
Guns, pills stolen
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 28-year-old South Side man reported that a shotgun, shotgun shells, a BB gun, prescription pain pills and $13 in coins were stolen from his West Boston Avenue residence. The man said the items were stolen between 2:15 and 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Dog-law violations
AUSTINTOWN -- A Kirk Road man received a summons on violations of leash laws and township ordinances regarding loose dogs when one of his two dogs killed a neighbor's cat Tuesday afternoon.
Police said they warned the man, 37, and his wife about their dogs three times last year, and on Nov. 3, the couple was issued a summons for animal violations.
The neighbor told police that the dogs chased her cat into a nearby camper at about 2 p.m. One of the dogs later came out of the camper with the cat, which was near death.
The cat was taken to a vet, who euthanized it.
Family Night Out
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Associated Neighborhood Centers at the McGuffey Centre will have a Family Night Out from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Jacobs Road facility.
Parents, grandparents and guardians are invited to play basketball, do arts and crafts, and use the center's computers and the fitness center. Care and activities for children ages 5 to 12 will be provided.
There is no charge, but people interested must register by calling the agency at (330) 744-4377.
Sacred Heart retreat

Prayer vigil is planned
GIRARD -- A prayer vigil for the Asente family will be at 6 p.m. Friday in St. Rose Church.
Rich and Cheryl Asente of Sioux Trail have been involved in an interstate custody battle to keep 4-year-old Justin.
Justin's biological parents, Regina Moore and Jerry Dorning of Kentucky, want him back after agreeing to give him up for adoption by the Asentes. The case will be heard Feb. 11 by the Kentucky Supreme Court.
The family's legal expenses have reached $500,000.

Adjusting budget
NORTH LIMA -- Beaver Township trustees will meet in special session at 6:15 p.m. today to make an adjustment to the township's budget. The meeting will be in the township meeting room in the South Range Plaza.
Facing forgery charge
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A Youngstown man is accused of passing a fake check at Wal-Mart in Union Township, Lawrence County.
Calvin Lamar Brown, 25, of Emery Avenue, is charged with forgery. Pennsylvania State Police said he had fake checks and identification when arrested at 8:56 p.m. Tuesday at the store.
He was arraigned by District Justice J.V. Lamb. He remained in the Lawrence County Jail late this morning after failing to post $20,000 bond.
