MAC BASKETBALL Akron rallies to 84-79 victory
The Zips handed Hampton its second straight loss after the Pirates opened the season at 4-0.

AKRON -- Derrick Tarver scored 25 points and John Hollingsworth scored 18, as Akron's guard tandem paced a second-half comeback in the Zips' win over Hampton, 84-79, Saturday.
Devin Green scored 23 points for Hampton, but the Pirates suffered a second-straight defeat after a 4-0 start.
Hampton made 50.8 percent of its shots and five more baskets than the Zips, but Akron outscored the Pirates 30-14 at the free throw line.
Andy Hipsher scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Akron.
In the first half, the Pirates surged to a 7-0 lead after Green's dunk. Hampton stayed ahead the whole half that closed with Green's layup and free throw and a 43-34 lead.
Green made 6-of-7 and scored 14 of his points in the first half.
Hampton opened the second half similarly, putting up the first five points to lead by 14. At that point, the Zips chipped away starting with Tarver's layup. Hollingsworth made a free throw that tied the score, 56-56, with 11:19 left.
Rick McFadden's layup with 8:23 remaining put Akron ahead 64-63, and the Zips were in charge the rest of the way. Darryl Peterson's two free throws put Akron ahead 80-73 with 30 seconds left.
Kent State 86, Boston College 83, OT
CLEVELAND -- Antonio Gates scored a career-high 32 points and freshman DeAndre Haynes came up with two key loose balls in the final 10 seconds as Kent State outlasted Boston College in the second game of the Balance Bar Rock-N-Roll Shootout on Saturday night.
Troy Bell scored 29 points and Craig Smith added 28 for Boston College (6-3).
Massachusetts 81, Marshall 58
AMHERST, Mass. -- Micah Brand had 17 points and Jackie Rogers added 15 as Massachusetts beat Marshall.
The Minutemen (4-6) led 47-28 at halftime and pulled ahead by as many as 25 in the second half. A pair of free throws by Michael Lasme with 4:50 to play made it 70-45. Lasme and Jeff Viggiano both finished with 13.
Marshall (5-3) was led by David Anderson with 10 points.
St. Bonaventure 94, Toledo 68
OLEAN, N.Y. -- Marques Green and Jamil Terrell each scored 22 points to lead St. Bonaventure to a victory over Toledo, ending the Rockets' five-game win streak.
The Bonnies (5-5) went on a 11-0 run late in the second half to take a 51-40 halftime lead. Toledo (6-4) trailed by as many as 27 points in the second half.
Bowling Green 80, Cleveland St. 72
CLEVELAND -- John Reimold scored 24 points to lead Bowling Green over Cleveland State in the first game of the Balance Bar Rock-N-Roll Shootout.
Reimold, a 6-foot-6 sophomore forward, scored seven consecutive points as Bowling Green (5-4) opened the second half with a 9-0 run to turn a 31-26 deficit into a 35-31 lead.
Modibo Niakate scored 23 points before fouling out to lead Cleveland State (5-7).
Navy 89, E. Michigan 81
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Scott Long scored 25 of his 31 points in the second half to lead the Midshipmen.
Long went 14-15 from the line and scored 8-13 field goals. He hit a three-pointer to start the second half and tied the teams with 43 apiece.
Marcell Cummings hit 6-14 baskets, made 2-3 free throws and 2-3 3-pointers to score 16 more for Navy (4-7).
Cincinnati 66, Miami, Ohio 54
CINCINNATI -- Leonard Stokes scored a game-high 18 points to lead Cincinnati.
Stokes scored 13 of those points in the first half and went on to hit the 1,001-points mark in his career.
Cincinnati (6-3) made an 11-0 run late in the first half to take control of the game. Field Williams added 11 points for Cincinnati.
Ill.-Chicago 77, N. Ilinois 45
DEKALB, Ill. -- Armond Williams scored 21 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for Illinois-Chicago.
Williams was one of four players to tally double-digit points for Illinois-Chicago (7-3). Jon Scheiderman had 15 points, Joe Scott chipped in 14, and Martell Bailey scored 13.
The Flames led 40-29 at the half and held Northern (4-6) to just 16 points the rest of the way.
