LOS FRESNOS, Texas -- Alana Beard had 27 points and eight rebounds, and top-ranked Duke's swarming defense forced 30 turnovers in the first round of the South Padre Island Shootout.
Duke (11-0) moved within a victory of matching its best start, in 1989. The Blue Devils had 19 steals, led by four each from Iciss Tillis and Vicki Krapohl.
Beard was 9-of-10 from the field and 8-of-9 from the free-throw line.
Lindsey Pasquinzo led Detroit (2-7) with 19 points.
Georgia Tech 65, No. 24 Georgia 61
ATLANTA -- Fallon Stokes scored 18 points and made a key defensive play late in the game to lead Georgia Tech to its first victory over Georgia.
Stokes batted away Kara Braxton's pass after Georgia Tech (9-1) took a 62-61 lead on a layup by Jessica Williams in the 25th meeting between the teams.
Sonja Mallory had 17 points and nine rebounds for Tech before fouling out with 1:45 remaining. Braxton led Georgia (6-4) with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
No. 18 South Carolina 57, Temple 39
PHILADELPHIA -- Jocelyn Penn scored 16 points -- well below her average -- but South Carolina never trailed while beating slumping.
Penn, the nation's second-leading scorer entering the game, has averaged 28.1 points. Cristina Ciocan had 12 points for South Carolina (9-1).
It was the fifth straight defeat for the Owls (4-6), the longest in Dawn Staley's three years as coach.
