Crash precedes arrest

Crash precedes arrest
SALEM -- Police arrested a Cleveland Street man, saying he fled from them in a stolen car and crashed.
A patrolman spotted a car in an alley off South Broadway Avenue about 7:53 p.m. Tuesday. The car had been reported stolen earlier in the evening from outside a city business.
When the patrolman attempted to stop the vehicle, it fled and crashed into a commercial structure on the 500 block of South Broadway Avenue.
After the crash, police arrested the driver, Ronald Grimm Jr., 30, and charged him with several violations, including receiving stolen property, resisting arrest and driving while intoxicated.
He was not injured in the wreck. He was in the Columbiana County Jail this morning.
No special audit
SALEM -- The state auditor's office is forgoing a special audit of the city school district.
A state auditor spokeswoman said consideration had been given to a special audit after the Columbiana County Prosecutor's Office launched a probe earlier this month into spending by former school treasurer Ted Cougras.
The auditor's office decided instead to include treasurer spending scrutiny in the school district's regular annual audit, which is under way.
Authorities are examining Cougras' $781 purchase in March of office equipment that he had delivered to his Poland home.
They also are looking for other spending irregularities.

Truck pulls down lines
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- A North Jackson, Ohio, man faces charges after the dump truck he was driving took out three power poles. Albert Kinkade, 67, faces careless driving and vehicle-height violations, a charge that applies because he failed to lower the bed of his truck and got caught on several power lines. Police said three power poles were pulled down and three others were damaged. Kinkade was trapped in the truck for about 30 minutes before Penn Power crews shut off the electricity. He was leaving 3100 Highland Ave. at noon Friday when the power lines came down, police said. Power was out on Highland Road between Pa. Route 18 and Dutch Lane, police said. The road was not reopened to traffic until 8 a.m. Saturday. The tri-axle dump truck is owned by Bob Energy Services Inc. of Youngstown, police said.
