Holiday party
NILES -- Alpha and Omega Productions will have its first holiday party beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday at the facility on Robbins Avenue. The event is open to the public and features a catered meal. Tickets are $15 for singles and $25 for couples. For information or tickets, call (330) 544-2737.
Candle safety
HARRISBURG -- Pennsylvania State Fire Commissioner Ed Mann is urging people to take steps to prevent candle fires in their homes during the holiday season.
The National Fire Protection Association shows that the number of home fires caused by candles has increased 20 percent from 1998 to 1999, with the fires peaking at Christmas. Mann said an estimated 40 percent of home candle fires start in the bedroom.
Mann said people should extinguish all candles when leaving the room or going to sleep; keep candles away from paper and flammable items; not put candles in windows; and not allow children under 18 to have candles in their bedrooms.
