CLEVELAND -- Mark Wood, principal violinist of Trans-Siberian Orchestra, will perform with 30 student instrumentalists in The Lakewood Project concert at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 24 at Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. The students, from Lakewood High School, will play traditional and electric stringed instruments, including violins, violas, cellos, guitars, bass, harp, percussion and keyboard. The group will give the premiere performance of "Strike the Match," a composition by Wood. Standing-room-only tickets are available for $10 each through Ticketmaster. Call (330) 747-1212.
The Lakewood Project will also perform Jan. 24 at the Ohio Music Educators Association convention in Cleveland.
Kuumba festival set
CLEVELAND -- The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum will be the location of The Kuumba Cultural Arts Fest, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 31. Artists from Cleveland, Akron and Detroit will perform music and dance and share their visual-art works. Admission is free. It's sponsored by Arts and Culture Coalition of Greater Cleveland, which was created to enhance cultural arts.
Ride shuttleson theater nights
PITTSBURGH -- The wheels on the bus will go 'round and 'round again in 2003, as Pittsburgh Cultural Trust will continue to provide free shuttle service in the downtown district on theater nights. Your Show Place Shuttle stops at Benedum Center, Heinz Hall, Byham Theater and O'Reilly Theater; the restaurants Asiago, The Carlton, Common Plea, Lidia's Italy, Palomino and Ruth's Chris Steak House; and at many parking garages.
Concert previews
CLEVELAND -- Cleveland Orchestra's upcoming concert previews will feature the ensemble's music director for the first time. Franz Welser-Most will discuss the works of Viennese composers with the orchestra's executive director, Thomas W. Morris, at 7 p.m. Jan. 9, 11 and 21, 10 a.m. Jan. 10 and 2 p.m. Jan. 12 in Reinberger Chamber Hall, inside Severance Hall. Concerts begin one hour later. Admission to concert previews is free for ticketholders.
NBA to use Simon song
NEW YORK -- Paul Simon's new song, "Father and Daughter," from "The Wild Thornberrys Movie" will be featured in public service announcements by the NBA.
The series of 60-second and 30-second spots will air starting Christmas Day.
Simon, Jason Kidd of the New Jersey Nets, Sue Bird of the Seattle Storm and Hall of Famers Willis Reed, Nate Archibald and Walt Frazier appear along with New York schoolchildren participating in the league's Read to Achieve program.
The first spot will air on ABC during the Christmas doubleheader featuring the Nets against Boston and the Los Angeles Lakers against Sacramento.
