HUBBARD -- Hubbard Christians in Action will have a community service Christmas Eve morning for seniors and those who don't want to go out Christmas Eve night. The service of carols, the Christmas story, and Bible readings will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Grace Lutheran Church. Communion will not be offered.
Coping service set
WARREN -- Howland Community Church will offer a "Longest Night" service at 3 p.m. Sunday for those dealing with loss and other troubles. The service will provide prayers, Scripture and music that help people acknowledge their concerns and God's help.
Communion will be included. No offering will be taken. Everyone is welcome, regardless of his or her religious background.
Christmas concert
BOARDMAN -- St. Charles Borromeo Parish will present a Christmas concert at 4 p.m. Dec. 29 featuring the choirs of St. Charles: the chorale, contemporary choir, handbell choir and children's choir. Also on the program are Dorota Sobieska, soprano; John Camuso, tenor; Wanda Sobieska, violinist; Hardin Butcher, trumpet; Betty Bannon, piano; and Jacek Sobieski, music director and pianist. An offering will be taken.
40th anniversary
YOUNGSTOWN -- Gibson Heights 2nd Presbyterian Church, 755 E. Dewey Ave., will celebrate the 40th anniversary of its merger with Gibson Heights United Presbyterian on Jan. 5. A worship service will be at 11 a.m. followed by a luncheon. Tickets for the luncheon are available by calling (330) 746-5371.
ACTION wins award
YOUNGSTOWN-- Alliance for Congregational Transformation Influencing Our Neighborhoods (ACTION), a local faith-based organization made up of 24 congregations and two organizations, received the "Best Public Meeting" Award at the Gamaliel Foundation's Seventh Annual National Leadership Assembly (NLA) on Dec. 6. The award is presented to the organization that exemplifies quality in conducting its meeting, in the commitment of public leaders and over-all community participation.
The Rev. Michael Harrison, pastor of Union Baptist Church and past-president of ACTION, accepted the award. The Rev. Mr. Harrison was also named as co-chair for the newly formed African American Leadership Commission, which was commissioned by the Gamaliel board of directors to discuss African American clergy issues. During the past year, Mr. Harrison served on the Gamaliel National Clergy Caucus. He will continue to represent ACTION next year.
Dr. Anne York, ACTION's current president, and Rev. Lewis Macklin, pastor of Holy Trinity Missionary Baptist Church, conducted an issues workshop on predatory lending. York, the national issues chairperson, will represent ACTION on the National Issue Campaign,civil rights for immigrants, over the next year. The Rev. Mr. Macklin will be ACTION's representative to the NLA Board for 2003.
Christmas musical
NEWTON FALLS -- "Hark The Herald Angels Sing," a dramatic Christmas musical, will be performed at Braceville United Methodist Church at 3 and 6 p.m. Sunday. A light supper will be provided at 4:30 p.m.
New Year's Eve concert
NORTH LIMA-- The North Lima Mennonite Church will present a concert with singers-songwriters and Grammy and Dove nominees Bill and Karen Itzel at 7 p.m. Dec. 31. The Itzels have performed in more than 2,000 concerts, written and recorded more than100 songs, and minister in 120 churches and concert events a year. Also appearing will be the local quartet God's Quad.
