Trinity QB suspended; team ready for Raiders

COMBINED DISPATCHES
SAN ANTONIO -- Trinity University quarterback Roy Hampton, 23, was suspended from the team Wednesday because of his arrest on public intoxication charges and will not play in the NCAA Division III championship game.
Hampton was arrested on San Antonio's River Walk early Sunday after the Tigers' 41-34 semifinal victory over St. John's (Minn.).
"We believe that we have no other choice but to take this action," athletic director Bob King said in a statement.
King said the suspension was based on prior conduct but would not elaborate.
Hampton has thrown for more than 4,000 yards and 43 touchdowns for Trinity (14-0) and leads Division III in pass efficiency. Dan DesPlaines will start at quarterback for Trinity when it takes on two-time defending champion Mount Union in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl on Saturday.
Hampton, who's from Burleson, and three other students were accused in October 2001 of breaking into a student's off-campus apartment.
Trinity officials initially suspended the students for one year, but after reviewing the case allowed them the option to resume classes in August. The other three stransferred.
Hampton "agreed to a number of things [to be reinstated] and we feel that has been violated with the second incident," King said. Hampton will not appeal the decision. He's scheduled to graduate in May and has not been kicked out of school.
