HELOISE Sticker residue causes wash-day dilemma

Dear Heloise: My life would be even more chaotic without your hints! Thanks! Here's my dilemma: My son's shirt was washed and dried with a sticker on it, and now I can't get the residue off. It is made of a shiny kind of 100 percent polyester, like a basketball jersey. Any tips? Jean K., Centreville, Va.
Here are some hints for you:
UYou might be able to remove it using oil-based pre-wash spray. Spray it on both sides and rub it until the glue dissolves. Wash it, and don't dry until the glue is gone.
UYou can try to put a wet cloth over the sticky area and iron over it with a warm iron. Usually it pulls up most of the residue; then you can pick off the rest. Heloise
Dear Heloise: When a new outfit comes with extra buttons, I sew them into the inside seam. This way, I can always find them when needed. Cindy Abbott, Friendswood, Texas
Dear Readers: Don't you hate those buttons on remote controls for TVs, VCRs, etc., that cannot be seen because they are the same color as the remote?
Color them using white typewriter correction fluid or red nail polish. You can use both colors -- one for "on" or "record" and the other for "stop" or "off." Heloise
Dear Heloise: Here is a tip I'd like to share with you and your readers. While styling my 5-year-old granddaughter's hair in small braids, I used elastic ponytail holders, which later got tangled with her hair, causing her pain and pulling her hair out when I took them out.
I then tried the ties you get with plastic baggies. They were easy to use -- just a few twists -- and easy to remove. Furthermore, they come in nice colors and hold nicely. She even slept in them overnight. It was a big hit. Madeline Sternlicht, Staten Island, N.Y.
Dear Heloise: Moving to a small apartment with less cabinet space in my kitchen, I found that if I put all my bottled spices in a 2-quart plastic container, it saves shelf space.
They are easy to see when needed. I use those containers for several things to save space. They are found in large discount stores. Velna Flynn, Kemah, Texas
Thanks for your hint, and speaking of spices, I have a four-page pamphlet, Seasonings, Salt and Substitutes, that is full of recipes. If you would like one, please send $3 and a legal-sized, self-addressed, stamped (60 cents) envelope to: Heloise/SSS, P.O. Box 795001, San Antonio, Texas 78279. To keep spices longer, don't store them above the stove, oven, sink or dishwasher, and don't sprinkle spices directly from the bottle over boiling water. Heloise
Dear Heloise: Enough about shower curtains. Magnets and weights might not always work. The simple solution -- turn the spray into the shower curtain. It pushes the curtain away from you, and there is still enough spray to shower with. Helen K., Okeechobee, Fla.
