TCL/ICL Sebring defeats Howland, stays on unbeaten trail
SEBRING -- Josh Dean had 22 points, eight rebounds and five steals as the Sebring High boys basketball team remained unbeaten with a 75-70 non-league victory over Howland on Tuesday.
Greg VanKirk added 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists for the Trojans (5-0), while Matt Ferguson and David Scarpitti had 14 points each.
Scarpitti, a point guard, also grabbed 15 rebounds and dished out seven assists, while Ed Householder had six assists and four steals.
Howland (1-3) was led by Justin Byler's 19 points. Scott Day had 18 points, while Ryan Johnson and Cody Chappell added 12 each.
Johnson also had 12 rebounds, while Brandon Kubicina handed out eight assists for the Tigers.
Howland, which committed 21 turnovers, trailed 22-11 after the first quarter but took a brief lead in the third before succumbing to Sebring.
Scarpitti and VanKirk combined for six straight free throws in the last two minutes to secure the Trojans' victory.
Southern 74, East Liverpool Christian 32
EAST LIVERPOOL -- Josh Diaz hit nine of 10 field goals and scored 21 points to lead Southern to victory. Diaz also grabbed 10 rebounds.
David VanDyne added 10 points and nine rebounds for Southern (3-2), while Randy Pitts added 10 points and eight rebounds.
Bobby Mackey scored 15 points for East Liverpool Christian.
Beaver Local 66, Lisbon 42
LISBON -- Derek Smith had 24 points and Jake Robinson 14 more as Beaver Local upended Lisbon. Pat Woods added 11 points for the Beavers (4-2).
Lucian Smith scored 15 points and Nick Schnader had 10 to lead Lisbon (2-2).
Wellsville 70, East Palestine 49
EAST PALESTINE -- Jared Mike scored 12 of his 18 points in the second half for the Tigers (2-3).
Chad Jones and Brett Young paced the Bulldogs (2-3), each with 11 points.
Jones had six rebounds and Young three assists.
Wellsville led 33-20 by the break.
Springfield 76, Mineral Ridge 53
MINERAL RIDGE -- Springfield got double-digit scoring from four players to defeat Mineral Ridge in an Inter-County League game.
Henrik Thomsen, a 6-foot-8 center, led the Tigers (3-1, 2-0) with 19 points, while Dan Schuler scored 16 and Rick Weimer and Jeff Mershimer 10 each.
Mineral Ridge (0-4, 0-2) was led by Jason Garland's 13 points, while Andrew Whitmer and Greg Dominic had 12 each.
Campbell 77, Lowellville 57
LOWELLVILLE -- Sophomore Teyon Harris hit 11 of 12 shots from the field and had 23 points as Campbell (3-3) won its third straight game.
Junior Darrin Johnson hit nine of 11 floor shots and added 22 points for the Red Devils, who hit 31 of 54 from the field for 57 percent.
Harris also had eight rebounds, while Ricky Quinn added 12 points and David Cash 11 points and nine rebounds.
For Lowellville (0-5), Mike Palumbo had 16 points and three assists, while Andrew Mamula added 13 points and eight rebounds.
