Salem woman charged in J.C. Penney theft
BOARDMAN -- A Salem woman is charged with stealing about $5,400 from the J.C. Penney store in the Southern Park Mall during her employment there. Teresa Stanton, 33, of Arch Street, will be arraigned in Boardman area court Thursday on felony grand theft charges. Police reports say she stole $5,200 in cash and $200 in gift cards. Reports list a surveillance video tape as evidence in the theft.
City prepares to set guidelines for project
YOUNGSTOWN -- The city and a civic center project developer are preparing to set parameters for a contract. City council will be asked tonight to let the board of control negotiate and sign a nonbinding memorandum of understanding with the Landmark Organization of Austin, Texas.
The document will outline the city's and Landmark's responsibilities concerning feasibility studies and other research, architectural plans, construction time lines and financing. The document is a prelude to specific contracts for design, financing, construction and other development of a proposed arena, hotel and convention center downtown, said city Finance Director David Bozanich.
Fighting brothers won't press charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- Neither of the Duffy brothers, who told police their drunken argument at home included a hatchet and hammer, wants to press charges. Boardman police were already on the scene and had the brothers handcuffed at 3726 Sunset Ave. on Tuesday afternoon when city police arrived. Donald J. Duffy, 50, and James E. Duffy, 45, told police they've fought in the past and never pressed charges.
James Duffy told police that he and his brother had been drinking and arguing all day. James Duffy said he was hit in the stomach with a hammer by his brother, who then grabbed the hatchet and struck his back, not breaking the skin. James Duffy said he tackled his brother and ran to a gas station with the hatchet to call police. Donald was treated for a cut on his hand, reports show.
Man pleads innocent
YOUNGSTOWN -- An Austintown man pleaded innocent Tuesday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court to charges of aggravated vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of an accident. Gary R. Davis, 44, of Cannon Road, submitted the pleas in writing rather than attending his arraignment. He is accused of running over 49-year-old Cheryl Rockney of Kenmore Court, Austintown, as she walked along Oak Street in August. Police say Davis' vehicle jumped the curb and hit Rockney.
Rolls of carpet stolen
YOUNGSTOWN -- Fifty-four yards of carpet on rolls and 60 yards of padding were stolen from a vacant parsonage at 468 Alameda, owned by First Calvary Baptist Church, reports show. The break-in was discovered Monday when a carpet installer arrived at the North Side home. Police said entry was made through a cellar window that had been kicked in.
Missing Struthers man found safe at toll plaza
STRUTHERS -- Pennsylvania State Police found a 78-year-old city man reported missing Sunday. Joseph S. Bishop, of 31 Wilson St., was discovered sitting in his blue car at a service plaza on the Pennsylvania Turnpike between Fort Littleton and Breezewood about 2 a.m. Monday. His family had reported him missing around 8:20 p.m. Sunday after he failed to return home from morning church services.
Apartments burglarized
CANFIELD -- Two apartments in the 600 block of St. Andrews Court were burglarized sometime Tuesday, according to the Mahoning County Sheriff's Department. A pry bar was used on the door of one apartment, and then someone kicked the door open. A Sony PlayStation and 60 DVDs were taken, reports show. At the second apartment, the resident found her door unlocked when she returned home. A deputy found that dresser drawers in a bedroom had been ransacked, as well as closets in the apartment. Nothing was reported missing by the resident, who thinks she may have left the door unlocked.
