COLUMBUS -- Brent Darby continued his strong play, scoring 30 points Saturday to lead Ohio State to a 74-60 victory over cold-shooting Morehead State.
Darby, who had a career-high 35 points against Duke on Dec. 3, hit 11-of-16 shots, including 5-of-7 3-pointers, and made several key baskets in the second half after Morehead State threatened to make it a game.
Sean Connolly added 12 points for the Buckeyes (3-2), but hit only 4-for-13 from the field and missed eight of his nine 3-point attempts.
Zach Williams scored 10 points for Ohio State, which led by as many as 20 points in the first half before the Eagles (3-3) made a run to get within 10 after halftime.
Second win in row
The Buckeyes won their second straight since losing consecutive games against No. 2 Alabama and No. 3 Duke. Ohio State hadn't played since a 71-64 win over Tennessee Tech on Dec. 7, giving the players a chance to take final exams.
Morehead State, which had scored 100 points in two of its three victories, never got its offense untracked.
The Eagles hit only 36 percent of their shots and committed 11 of their 17 turnovers in the first half while the Buckeyes built a 36-22 lead -- with half of the points coming from Darby.
Morehead State leading scorer Ricky Minard had nine points, 14.8 below his average. Marquis Sykes had 12 points and Chad McKnight scored 10 for the Eagles.
Darby had 15 of the Buckeyes' first 22 points. He hit 7-of-9 shots, including 4-of-5 3-pointers, in the first half while playing the entire 20 minutes.
No. 21 Michigan St. 71,No. 12 Kentucky 67
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Chris Hill scored 16 points and made two free throws with 13.6 seconds remaining to seal Michigan State's victory.
Paul Davis added 13 and Alan Anderson had 10 for the Spartans (5-2), who won despite getting out-rebounded for the first time this season. Kentucky (5-2) had a 34-30 advantage.
Keith Bogans scored 23 to lead the Wildcats, who had won four straight. Bogans was 11-of-17 from 3-point range in Kentucky's last three games, but he was 3-of-8 on Saturday, and he couldn't knock down a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 21 seconds remaining and his team trailing 69-67.
Hill ended up with the loose ball and was fouled, and he calmly made the free throws to put the game out of reach.
Marquis Estill and Erik Daniels had 12 points each for the Wildcats, who shot 46 percent, their worst effort in four games.
No. 15 Illinois 70, Temple 54
CHICAGO -- Brian Cook had 25 points and 11 rebounds as Illinois held a road-weary Temple to its worst shooting game of the season.
Illinois (7-0) led 50-43 when Deron Williams and Sean Harrington made back-to-back 3-pointers to key a 20-9 run.
Temple (1-6) played its second straight game without coach John Chaney, who was at home while he recovers from pneumonia. Before the recent illness, the 70-year-old coach had missed just three games in 21 years at Temple.
With Chaney watching at home on television, the coach's trademark zone defense frustrated the Illini's shooters all game. Illinois shot a season-low 43 percent from the field.
As bad as Illinois was from the field, Temple was much worse.
The Owls, playing in a school-record sixth straight road game, shot just 29 percent and made 6-of-28 3-point attempts.
David Hawkins led Temple with 22 points, and senior Alex Wesby added 15. Temple's other three starters, all freshmen, combined for nine points on 3-of-13 shooting.
Penn State 79, Northeastern 67
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Brandon Watkins and Sharif Chambliss both scored 21 points for Penn State.
Chambliss led a second-half comeback, scoring 19 points, including five 3-pointers, as Penn State (1-6) went on a 25-8 run. His two foul shots put the Nittany Lions ahead, 54-41.
Northeastern cut the lead to four points on a lay-up by Jamaar Walker with four minutes remaining, but the Huskies (2-4) couldn't get any closer.
Watkins scored 14 points in the second half and also finished with eight assists and five rebounds.
Northeastern's Aaron Davis scored 18 points and freshman Jose Juan Barea had 17, but the Huskies hurt themselves on the foul line, shooting just 11-of-21 for the game.
Michigan 84,Charleston Southern 53
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- LaVell Blanchard had 24 points, with 17 in the first half, and seven rebounds for Michigan.
The Wolverines (2-6) have won two straight -- for the first time since starting 2-0 in the Big Ten last season -- after losing their first six games for the first time in program history.
Chris Warzynski scored 14 for the Buccaneers (4-2), who had won four straight.
