The IHS Alzheimer's Center of Excellence Award, an internal evaluation process that consists of meeting and exceeding a variety of Alzheimer's program standards for IHS Alzheimer's and dementia residents, was established in 2001 to promote excellence in the quality of care for people with Alzheimer's disease and related disorders.
Medicine management
NEW YORK, N.Y. -- AARP's Modern Maturity magazine, in a special "drug smart" section, says that in the United States nearly half of all medications are not taken as directed: 14 percent of prescriptions are never filled; 13 percent are filled but never used; 29 percent are filled but not finished. AARP offers medicine tips, such as getting prescription drugs out of the medicine cabinet because the bathroom's heat and moisture rapidly deteriorate the effectiveness of medicines; and the hour of day you take medicine can radically alter its effectiveness. To order copies of AARP Modern Maturity's Drug Smart pullout section, call (800) 4224-2410 and refer to stock number D17698; or go to its Web site, www.aarp.org.

REPORTS
Antibiotics help heart
DALLAS, Texas -- A study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association says that hospitalized heart patients who took antibiotics had a significantly lower risk of returning to the hospital with unstable angina or a nonfatal heart attack, or to suffer a fatal heart attack, compared with those on a placebo. The study, conducted at Mayday Hospital in Croydon, England, suggests that antibiotics might provide anti-inflammatory benefits.
