Surrender in slaying
YOUNGSTOWN -- Eugene Archer, 54, of Cohasset Drive surrendered to detectives Monday and gave a videotaped confession to the Saturday night shooting death of Bruce Howard of Austintown, reports show.
Archer was expected to be arraigned later today in municipal court on a charge of murder. Howard, 51, of Fountain Square, was shot at the N & amp;N Supermarket on Glenwood Avenue.
Shot during burglary
YOUNGSTOWN -- James Simmons Jr. was recovering today at St. Elizabeth Health Center after being shot during a burglary at his girlfriend's Columbia Street home at 11:30 p.m. Monday, reports show.
Simmons, 31, of West Chalmers Avenue, was shot in the leg when he told three intruders that he had no drugs. The bullet lodged in his thigh.
The intruders then forced Simmons and his girlfriend into the basement and ransacked the living room.
Meeting canceled
NORTH JACKSON -- The Jackson Township trustee meeting scheduled for tonight has been canceled. The trustees' next meeting will be Sept. 17.
Burglary charges
STRUTHERS -- A 39-year-old Youngstown man will have a preliminary hearing Friday in municipal court here on charges related to a burglary Saturday at a Crescent Street home.
Police said two Struthers men detained George S. Oracio of Brandywine Drive after a break-in at their home.
Police said the two men confronted Oracio after they found his car parked in their driveway and him leaving by the back door of their home with a CD player and tire iron.
The men tackled Oracio and held him until police arrived.
Police charged Oracio with burglary, felonious assault and possession of criminal tools.
Kids' Night
YOUNGSTOWN -- During Pizza Hut's Kids' Night tonight at 3926 Youngstown-Poland Road, deputies from the Mahoning County Sheriff's Department will provide a safety presentation for the kids and their parents.
The deputies will fingerprint the children, talk to them about safety, and make identification kits for each child. Parents can bring the kids for pizza and fingerprints from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
