AREA SANDLOTS Poland in state title game today



Poland advanced by beating Hamilton, 10-6.
CINCINNATI -- The Poland Little League baseball team of 10-year-olds will play in the state title game today at 11 a.m. against either Painesville or Hamilton.
Poland advanced after defeating Hamilton 10-6 in the fourth round of tournament play.
Luke Wollet had three singles, while Jamie Serich picked up a pair of hits, including a double, and Bradley Ferraro added a hit.
The Bulldogs scored four runs in the fourth inning, with the big play being a two-run homer by Sean Gabriel. In the fifth inning, a run was scored by EJ Kosec from first on a double by David McLaughlin.
Others scoring were Jimmy Dobran, Johnny Bokros and Brett Modic.
Key defensive plays in the game were made by Matt Mrozek and Dominic DeFelice.
Modic was the winning pitcher, picking up his seventh consecutive tournament victory.
12-under Pony League
STERLING, Va. -- The Valley Sting girls 12-and-under softball team finished ninth out of 76 teams at last week's Pony League tournament.
The team lost to eventual champion Virginia Shamrocks, 6-1, and the Scarbough (Canada) Spirit, 4-0 and 10-5. The two teams advanced to the title game.
The Sting finished 6-3. Danielle Burin and Amanda Furmage each batted .465 in nine games. Caitlyn Youngs, Karre Thompson and Caitlin Reid each had seven RBIs in the tournament.
Markie Pozzuto won five games and struck out 73 and Youngs won the other game and had 26 strikeouts.
Other team members are Brittany Burin, Ashleigh Bristow, Courtney Schiffauer, Jacque Boltik and Colleen Courtney.
