PREP SOFTBALL Brown's grand slam first for Cards



In Struthers' 16-1 win over Campbell, Michelle Zanni, a freshman making her first pitching start, got the win.
CANFIELD -- Junior Elizabeth Brown hit a line drive over the left-field fence for what Canfield coach Fred Mayhew called the first grand slam in school history as the Cardinals softball team swept a doubleheader from Hubbard Saturday.
Brown had three hits and five RBIs as Canfield (8-8) improved to .500 after a 1-6 start with a 10-1 victory. Junior Amanda Williams also had three hits, while junior Megan Turocy had two. Turocy (6-7) tossed a four-hitter, striking out 11.
Canfield also won 5-4 as junior Lindsay Yosay (1-1) earned her first varsity victory. Brown had three hits and Turocy two. Sophomore Ginny Naples drove in two runs.
For Hubbard, Lynle Cornell knocked in two runs with a double. McKee, Anna DeJulio and Colleen Sullivan had two hits apiece for Hubbard (8-4).
Canton Central Catholic 4, Mooney 2: NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Melissa LaRosa, although she scattered five hits, was handed her first setback of the season, snapping a six-game winning streak.
Canton Central Catholic's (6-6) runs were unearned because they took advantage of the Cardinals' five errors.
Mooney 4, Champion 2: NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Danielle Kepics (6-2) scattered five hits, struck out 11 and hit a double, two singles and scored twice for Mooney.
Boardman 12, Kent Roosevelt 0; Boardman 2, Columbus DeSales 1: BOARDMAN -- Ashley DiDomenico tossed a three-hitter in Boardman's 12-0 win, and second-game winning pitcher Jennifer Pancake had a one-hitter and drove in the go-ahead run with a two-out single in the bottom of the fifth.
DiDomenico (4-0) struck out seven and walked one. Jaclyn Corroto had three singles and scored three times, Laura Amero had two singles and scored twice and Jennifer Feret had a single and double and scored three times for Boardman (16-3).
In the 2-1 win, senior Mary McCabe had three singles, scored Boardman's first run and had two stolen bases. Pancake's single scored Feret from third.
Poland 6, Massillon Jackson 5: KENT -- Poland got even with Massillon Jackson by handing the Polar Bears their first defeat of the season in the Ohio Invitational Fastpitch Tournament.
At Poland a week ago, Jackson beat Poland, 2-1.
With Jackson leading 5-4, Steffi Graf singled to lead off the sixth inning. With two outs, Graf stole second and Stephanie Russell reached base on an error to put runners on second and third.
Senior Aslyne Rodriguez had a two-strike, pinch-hit single to knock in Graf and Jessie Modic, a courtesy runner for Russell.
Graf finished with a double and single and two RBIs for the winners.
For Jackson (12-1), Megan Verde had two singles and Heather Burnham tripled.
Poland 6, Akron Firestone 0: Mallory Conger's three-hitter in the sophomore's first varsity appearance led the Bulldogs.
At the plate for Poland (13-4), Kristy Gaudiose and Steffi Graf each had two singles and scored twice. Aslyne Rodriquez singled to bring in two runs, while senior Tiffany Fonagy had two singles.
Struthers 16-3, Campbell 1-2: STRUTHERS -- Struthers won a six-inning game shortened by the 15-run rule, then won the second game on senior Laura Berry's single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
In the 16-1 win, Michelle Zanni, a freshman making her first pitching start, got the win. She struck out three and walked one through six full innings. Previously, Zanni had been on the JV squad with one inning of varsity experience.
Sophomore Holly Hickenbottom had three singles and two RBIs, junior Katy Shurilla had two singles and an RBI, senior Heather Hrina tripled and finished with four RBIs and junior Jaime Zupko also tripled.
Struthers won the 3-2 game when Zupko reached on an error, then advanced to third on wild pitches and scored on Berry's hit.
After relieving Ashley Domico in the second inning, senior Loriel Singer had 13 strikeouts over the last six innings for the Wildcats (8-9).
Fitch 4, Copley 1: KENT -- Freshman Jen Purnell hit two doubles for the Falcons at the Triple D Tournament.
Joanna Fergus doubled, while Jen Ragusa and Julie Reigrut had singles.
Winning pitcher Brianna Ozias scattered seven hits.
Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary 2, Fitch 1: KENT -- The Falcons (7-14) stranded three runners in the seventh inning.
Ozias (5-9) surrendered eight hits as Akron SV-SM improved to 9-5. For Fitch, Ozias, Purnell, Ragusa, Nastasja Faison and Ashley Bartlo had hits.
Southeast 5, Woodridge 2: PENINSULA -- Kara Gintert had a single, triple and two RBIs for the Pirates (7-7, 7-2).
Lisa Morrison tacked on two hits, one a double, for the winners.
