McDONALD -- The board of education approved a new school calendar Monday for the 2002-03 school year, with classes starting Aug. 22 for teachers and Aug. 26 for pupils.
Classes end June 6, 2003, for teachers and June 5 for pupils.

In other action Monday, the board:
UAccepted the retirement resignation of Joyce Vilk, elementary teacher at Roosevelt Elementary. Principal Anthony Russo said her retirement is "a big blow to our staff. ... I don't know who will be able to take her place."
UAccepted donations of $100 from Stan and Joanne Robinson for the National Honor Society fund-raiser for new school signs in memory of Ronald William Kelly, a 1959 graduate of McDonald High School, and $85 to be applied toward the Richard C. Blair Scholarship Fund, the donation to be made in memory of Maxine M. Barhoover.
UUpcoming school activities announced are: the Roosevelt Elementary School Spring Sing, 7 p.m. Friday in the high school auditorium, and the annual McDonald High School Lip Sync Program, May 2 at 8 p.m. in the high school auditorium.
UA second day of kindergarten screening will be at Roosevelt Elementary School on April 25. Contact the school for additional details.
The board meets again in regular session at 6 p.m. May 9 in the high school library.
