COLUMBIANA CORNER Shootings strain agencies

Last week was a long one for Columbiana County deputy sheriffs and prosecutors.
It started April 7, when they responded to a shooting rampage in a mobile home park off U.S. Route 62 in Knox Township that left a woman dead.
The 42-year-old victim was the county's first homicide in 2002. The county averages about one slaying a year.
On Wednesday, deputies and prosecutors were summoned to probe a shooting in Madison Township.
The episode left a township resident critically wounded.
As if that's not enough, officials are faced with tight budgets that will be further strained by the investigation and prosecution costs of both cases.
Donations to district: Alumni and friends of the East Palestine City School District will soon have the opportunity to donate to the school district by bequest, memorial gift or tax-exempt donation.
Schools Superintendent Jeff Richardson said the state has issued a nonprofit charter certificate for the East Palestine City School District Education Foundation.
He said the newly formed foundation committee met recently to organize, with Kim Maxwell elected president.
Richardson said the Foundation will accept donations once the Internal Revenue Service approves its tax-free status.
