Salem man is injured
HANOVERTON -- A 54-year-old Salem man was in serious condition Saturday night in the intensive care unit of Akron General Medical Center after a motorcycle crash, state police and hospital personnel said.
Richard Javens was taken by medical transport helicopter to the hospital after the crash at 4:35 p.m. Saturday on Mechanicstown Road south of U.S. Route 30, said Trooper Craig Monte at the Lisbon post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Javens was driving a motorcycle south when it went off the right side of the road and struck a tree, Monte said. No other vehicles were involved. Alcohol use is not suspected.
East Side man arrested
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police arrested a 25-year-old East Side man after a short foot chase during which he threw a plastic bag of suspected crack cocaine over a barbed wire fence, police reports show.
Police said they encountered the man, of Cassius Avenue, about 4:30 p.m. Saturday while investigating a motor vehicle complaint in the 600-block of Kendis Circle. He ran when police questioned him and another man.
Officers found $510, a pager and a cellular phone on him before transporting him to Mahoning County Jail.
Drug charges filed
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police arrested two men in separate situations Friday on drug charges. A 24-year-old Glenaven Avenue man was arrested about 10 p.m. and charged with felony trafficking in cocaine and misdemeanor drug abuse (marijuana) after police found the drugs in his car during a traffic stop at Mahoning Avenue and Edwards Street. Another man in the car was given a misdemeanor citation for smoking marijuana.
In a separate occurrence, police arrested a 47-year-old Florida man about 8 p.m. on Otis street. He was charged with felony drug abuse cocaine and misdemeanor drug paraphernalia after a piece of crack was found in his truck along with a push rod and razor blade. A female passenger was not charged.
Meeting change
McDONALD-- McDonald Board of Education has changed its regular April meeting from Thursday to Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the high school library.
