Basketball recruit
YOUNGSTOWN -- Jamel Porter of Casper (Wyo.) Junior College has signed a national letter of intent with the Youngstown State men's basketball program.
The 6-foot-7, 230 pound forward will have two years of eligibility remaining.
Porter, a native of Paterson, N.J., will help add a post presence for the Penguins, according to coach John Robic.
"He is a player who will add much needed support to our front line," Robic said. "He brings two years of junior college experience to the program and we are hoping that he can contribute this year.
Last season at Casper he averaged 14 points and a team-best 4.2 rebounds per game. He was named to the National Junior College Athletic Association All-Region IV first team.
Porter joins guards Jonathan Mends of Miami, Fla., and Derrick Harris of Cambridge, Mass., who both signed letters of intent last November.
Women's golf
RICHMOND, Ky. -- Youngstown State was 10th out of 15 teams after the first round of the (Eastern Kentucky) Lady Colonel Classic on Thursday.
The Penguins had a first round score of 329, while Austin Peay was the leader at 310.
Junior Nichole Hamstreet and freshman Gina Abrazzino were YSU's top scorers, each posting 80's for 23rd place. Sophomore Lori Hatcher shot 84 and senior Stephanie Matasek shot 85.
The tournament continues today and concludes Saturday.

Mill Creek opensNorth course
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mill Creek Park's North Golf Course officially opened for play Thursday. Tee times for the weekend and holiday play are taken on the Monday prior to that date. Weekday times are available, but not required. Groups may schedule tee times in advance on a non-regular basis.

Area ace
BOARDMAN -- Bill Walcott of Boardman made a hole-in-one Thursday afternoon at Reserve Run Golf Course.
Walcott aced the No. 4 hole, 153 yards using a 7-iron. He was in a foursome with Tony Sugar, John Fedor and Eric Lanardo.
Boardman vaultersets school record
BOARDMAN -- Boardman senior Brian Zorman broke a school record in the pole vault with a jump of 13 feet, 4 inches, as Boardman won a triangular with Canton McKinley and Austintown Fitch on Thursday.
M. Leskosky had the old record of 13-1, set in 1986. Boardman dropped the pole vault after the 1987 season but brought it back in 2001. Zorman has only been vaulting for one year.

* Austintown Fitch High sophomore track athlete Sarah Tate was incorrectly identified as Sarah Cates in Wednesday's editions. Tate won the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes in Tuesday's track meet.
* Erin Mogg, a junior, won the long jump with a distance of 13 feet, 9 inches in Canfield's track and field meet victory 92-24 over Struthers Tuesday. Nicole Rovenolt of Struthers was listed incorrectly at the winner.
Bland, Davidsonon AAU team
RALEIGH, N.C. -- Sophomores Amber Bland of Boardman and Courtney Davidson of Ursuline played for the Queen City Jaguars AAU team which won the championship of the U-16 "C" pool play tournament recently as part of the Deep South Shootout.
Bland was named tournament MVP after Queen City beat the West Virginia Tornadoes to finish undefeated.
Ashlee Russoin all-star game
WESTERVILLE -- Boardman senior Ashlee Russo will play in the North-South girls all-star basketball game Sunday at Otterbein College.
Russo, who will play at Youngstown State, will be a member of the Division I North squad, which plays at 1:30 p.m. The game for players in Div. III-IV starts at noon. Games for boys are scheduled at 3 and 4:30 p.m.
A $6 ticket entitles fans to admission for all four games.
Coach hired
BERLIN CENTER --The Western Reserve Board of Education hired Melanie Fleece as varsity volleyball coach for the 2002 season. She teaches learning disabled-students at Western Reserve.
She has been an assistant coach at Canfield and Warren Harding.
