Urban league speaker
GIRARD -- "Commitment, Consistency and Achievement" will be the topic of Ron Daniels, a Youngstown native and executive director of the Center for Constitutional Rights in New York, at the Youngstown Area Urban League's 36th annual dinner and awards banquet at 6:30 p.m. April 19 at Mahoning Country Club.
A veteran social and political activist who has taught at numerous universities, Daniels was executive director of the National Rainbow Coalition in 1987, deputy campaign manager for Jesse Jackson's 1988 presidential bid and a key organizer of the 1995 Million Man March.

Northeast Homeowners
YOUNGSTOWN -- Kathleen Rodi, project engineer and program manager for Eastgate Regional Council of Governments, will be the guest speaker when the Northeast Homeowners Association meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Price Memorial AME Zion Church, 920 Dryden Ave.
Sheridan Block Watch
YOUNGSTOWN -- Members of Sheridan Block Watch will discuss becoming an IRS-recognized nonprofit corporation at their monthly business meeting at 6:30 p.m. April 15 at Martin Luther Lutheran Church at Hudson and Clearmount avenues.
Science center bus trip
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning Valley Historical Society will sponsor a bus trip April 27 to the Great Lakes Science Center in Cleveland to view the Titanic exhibition, which contains more than 250 shipwreck artifacts, including 50 never before on public display.
Reservation deadline is April 15. Cost is $40 for society members, $45 for nonmembers. Call the society at (330) 743-2589 for more information.
South Range board
NORTH LIMA -- South Range Board of Education will meet in special session at 7 p.m. Monday to authorize the district treasurer to advertise for bids for improvements to the parking lot.
Funding for the project will come from a grant from the Recycling Division of Mahoning County.
Amateur Radio Club
CANFIELD -- The 20/9 Amateur Radio Club is offering free amateur radio and upgrade classes from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursdays at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center in Canfield. The first classes will be Thursday.

Marijuana garden
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police found marijuana plants growing in a hydroponic garden Saturday morning in a room at a Manhattan Avenue home.
Reports do not say how much marijuana was growing. The woman who owns the house said she rents out the room, but wouldn't identify who rents the room for fear of retaliation.
Her ex-husband called police after smelling marijuana in the home and spotting the plants through a crack in a door.
