HUBBARD Trustees appeal OK for blasting

Township trustees want the state to take historic coal mining into account.
HUBBARD -- Township trustees have appealed an Ohio Department of Natural Resources ruling that allows blasting to resume at a Brookfield stone quarry.
Trustee Fred Hanley said the township has filed the appeal with Mike Sponsler, chief of ODNR's Mineral Resources Management Division.
City Aggregates & amp; Recycling Inc. of Youngstown blasts rock at its Stone City Products facility along state Route 7 in Brookfield, just north of the Hubbard township line.
The stone is crushed and used in the construction industry.
Hubbard Township residents have complained that the blasting has damaged their homes.
On Feb. 7, ODNR found City Aggregate's blasting exceeds limits of its state-approved plan.
Allowed to resume: After the plan was amended and corrections made, the company was permitted to resume detonating the explosives.
Hanley said trustees are basing the appeal on more information from residents and information about previous coal mining in the area from Ann Harris, Youngstown State University geology professor.
Hanley said trustees want the state to review its ruling and take the results of subsurface coal mining into consideration.
