NILES -- Police are investigating several vehicle break-ins between Monday night and Tuesday. Thirteen people reported their vehicles broken into and items such as stereo equipment, compact discs and money taken. The vehicles were parked at Timber Creek Apartments, North Road.
Abduction, robbery
NILES -- A South Street man reported being pulled into a car while walking along Mason Street early today. The man, 48, told police that a car with four occupants stopped and one of the occupants asked him for directions near Cedar Street. One of the men pulled him into the car and the four hit him and demanded money while he was in the vehicle. One of the men threw him from the car at Wood Street and kicked him as he lay on the street. He lost consciousness and was missing $70 when he came to. He staggered home and called police and an ambulance. He was treated at St. Joseph Health Center.
Fall Fest in Liberty
LIBERTY -- Fall Fest 2001 will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 7 in Church Hill Park near state routes 304 and 193 (Belmont Avenue).
The festival is sponsored by the Liberty Township Park Improvement Committee.
Events will include crafts, quilts, historical and herb displays, rides, face painting, yard decorations, entertainment by a disc jockey, a bake sale and car show sponsored by Consumer Car Co. & amp; Advanced Auto. Admission is free; crafters pay a $10 fee. Call (330) 759-1315.
Book signing in Warren
WARREN -- Authors Carmen J. Leone and Robert A. Calcagni will autograph their books from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Book Nook in the Warren Plaza. Leone wrote both "Rose Street" and "Rose Street Revisited." They are biographical novels about the Rose Street neighborhood in Youngstown. Calcagni joined with Leone in development of "Remembering Our Rose Streets," a guide for collecting and writing family stories.
Grant for firefighters
EAST PALESTINE -- East Palestine Fire Department will use a $13,365 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency's assistance to firefighters program to buy lightweight protective clothing. Chief Merle Stewart said the lightweight suits are more suitable for firefighting in hot weather than regular gear. He said the lightweight clothing will particularly benefit firefighters and emergency medical personnel during grass fires. Stewart doesn't know how many suits the grant will buy because the department must advertise for bids.
Hidden video camera
EDINBURG, Pa. -- A 40-year-old man faces charges after a hidden video camera was found in his bathroom. Pennsylvania State Police say the camera was used to videotape five girls, all under age 18, in different states of undress while they used the bathroom. George Steven Bissett of New Bedford Road faces nine counts each of sexual abuse of children, criminal use of a communication facility, invasion of privacy and sexual abuse of children. Police said the camera was discovered by Bissett's 14-year-old daughter. Police arrested Bissett on Tuesday. He was arraigned before District Justice J.V. Lamb and released on $5,000 bond.
Phony gold bars
ERIE, Pa. (AP) -- Three men accused of trying to sell phony gold bars to a Millcreek Mall merchant were ordered Tuesday to stand trial. Alexander Bowers, 48, of Youngstown, Ohio; Ervin Haywood Watson, 44, of Stone Mountain, Ga.; and Michael Nathaniel Nelms, 40, of Lithonia, Ga., were each charged with attempted theft by deception and conspiracy. The three are accused of offering 300 solid 24-karat gold bars to the merchant.
She crossed the line
SHARON, Pa. -- Police said a Grant Street woman drew too much attention to herself when the man she was riding with was stopped by Brookfield Township police on a DUI investigation around 2:45 a.m. today. Police said Lisa M. Johnston, 21, became belligerent and argued and swore at Brookfield officers at the intersection of Grant Street and State Line Road. Brookfield called Sharon police to the scene after Johnston and another woman in the car crossed into Pennsylvania and continued their tirade. Sharon police said Johnston was wanted as a fugitive from justice for failing to appear for court hearings on charges of harassment, burglary and simple assault. They arrested her and added a charge of disorderly conduct. The woman with her was also charged with disorderly conduct, and both were in city jail this morning awaiting arraignment.
