Restaurants kick off United Way campaign

SHARON, Pa. -- Restaurant Revue 2001, traditionally the campaign kickoff point for the United Way of Mercer County, is expected to generate about $11,000 for this year's fund drive.
About 500 people paid $30 each to attend the event Thursday at The Rosemont Banquet Center on Sterling Avenue.
Jim Micsky, United Way executive director, said 19 restaurants, most from Mercer County but a few from Trumbull County and elsewhere, put together their tastiest treats for participants to sample. The event lasted 21/2 hours.
The annual Restaurant Revue used to be the kickoff of the United Way's fall campaign, but strategy changed this year when Steve Gurgovits, president of First National Bank, took over the reins as chairman of the 2001 fund drive.
He launched an intense, short campaign Sept. 1 that is scheduled to wrap up Oct. 19, greatly shortening the fund drive that has extended to as long as six months in recent years.
This year's goal has been set at $1.1 million.
