Niles candlelight vigilis scheduled Sunday
NILES -- Residents are invited to a candlelight vigil at 7 p.m. Sunday in the large pavilion at Waddell Park in honor of the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
The vigil will include the Army-Navy Color Guard, singers, bagpipes and the bell choir from St. Steven Church.
The day and time of the event corresponds to a candlelight vigil in New York City's Shea Stadium.
Patriotic rally plannedin Youngstown
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Jewish Community Center on Gypsy Lane will have a United We Stand for America: A Red, White and Blue Rally from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday and a spinning marathon from 1 to 4 p.m.
Marathon proceeds will go to the American Red Cross to assist with New York City and Washington, D.C., disaster relief. The JCC is accepting $100 donations to sponsor a bike and is suggesting a $10 donation for riders.
The rally will feature musical presentations by the Boardman High School Marching Band and the Akiva Academy Choir and patriotic readings by members of various faith groups, and a keynote speech on terrorism by Dr. Saul Friedman, a Youngstown State University history professor.
Red, white and blue ribbons will be available as well as order forms to purchase New York City Fire Department memorial T-shirts and sweat shirts. Mahoning Valley fire department unions are selling these items in support of fallen rescue workers in New York City.
No debris from sitesof crashes for landfills
POLAND -- Debris from the New York City and Pentagon crash sites will not be coming to the Carbon Limestone Sanitary Landfill, or other local landfills, said Carbon Limestone Manager Michael Heher. About 14 Pennsylvania landfills were given emergency clearance by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection to expand their hours of operation and waive daily tonnage limits to accept the trash.
The landfills are in Somerset County, Cambria County and in the eastern or central part of the state.
Grief counseling
LOS ANGELES -- Anyone needing grief counselors can search for mental health professionals who will fill their specific needs at www.4therapy.com.
About 1,000 mental health professionals from all 50 states are listed and visitors can search by location, specialty, sex, price range or types of insurance accepted, said Howard A. Brown, who founded the service three years ago.
Since the terrorist attacks on the United States, 4therapy.com has experienced a 20 percent increase in traffic. Ordinarily, Brown said, the site receives 250,000 hits a month.
In addition to searching for counselors, visitors can access 8,000 articles related to mental health, grief and trauma, self-assessment tests, expert-moderated forums, confidential chat rooms and reports on mental health issues.
Services provided by the Web site are free and available around the clock.
Terrorism task forceswill be formed in U.S.
A series of terrorism task forces will be formed by the U.S. Attorney General's Office.
A task force will be established within every U.S. attorney's district, by order of Attorney General John Ashcroft. They will coordinate the dissemination of information and the development of investigative and prosecutorial strategy in dealing with terrorism across the country.
Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties are in Ohio's northern district, based in Cleveland. Mercer and Lawrence counties are in Pennsylvania's western district, based in Pittsburgh.
Red Cross relief report
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- More than $35,000 was raised in a two-day collection on the city streets, said Mayor Timothy Fulkerson. Volunteers lined South Jefferson Street and Kennedy Square to collected money from passing motorists for the American Red Cross relief fund. Mayor Fulkerson the money will be used to aid those affected by the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Electrical Supply effort
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown Electrical Supply sold T-shirts Friday at its annual pig roast at its Marshall Street plant to raise money for national relief efforts. The company has the event for customers.
Students' approval
Seventy-four percent of more than 7,000 college students surveyed nationwide say they approve of how President Bush is handling the terrorist crisis. The survey was taken by www.CollegeClub.com, a college-oriented Web site. A separate poll shows that 43 percent of college students thought Bush's speech Thursday night was excellent; 36 percent said they didn't hear the speech.
Ambulance fund-raiser
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Noga Ambulance Service, 2615 Wilmington Road in Neshannock Township, is collecting donations for the New York City Fire and EMS fund from 6 to 11 p.m. today. People from Lawrence and Mercer counties who donate $30 or less will receive a free individual or family membership, good until Feb. 1, 2020. Individual donations in excess of $30 will receive a 16-month membership, good until Feb. 1, 2003. Noga memberships, $20 for individuals and $25 for families, cover ambulance services not paid by insurance.
