AUSTINTOWN -- A 21-year-old Masury man faces charges of driving under the influence, failing to comply with the signal of a law enforcement officer, reckless driving, running a red light and speeding after he led township police on a 10-mile chase reaching speeds of 90 mph, police said.
The chase began around 2 a.m., when police observed the car run a red light while northbound on South Raccoon Road at Burkey Road.
The vehicle also ran a red light at Mahoning Avenue going about 80 mph and slowed to 35 mph at North Four Mile Run Road, where a passenger jumped out and rolled about 50 feet, police said.
Police chased the vehicle east on County Line Road, then onto Interstate 80, stopping the pursuit near Exit 231, police said. The car continued and crashed near Exit 227.
Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers from the Warren barracks took the driver to the township police department, where he had a blood-alcohol level of 0.254; more than 2 1/2 times the legal limit for driving, police said.
The passenger, a 22-year-old Brookfield man, was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown for treatment. He faces a charge of disorderly conduct. Both men are set to appear Monday in Mahoning County Court.
