U Approved a 4-percent rate increase for substitutes, as follows: Teachers, $68 per day; custodians, $6.75 per hour; bus drivers, $8.30 per hour; cooks, $5.55 per hour; attendants, $6 per hour; secretary/aide, $7 per hour; interpreter, $8.40 per hour.
U Approved Monday a request from Community Solutions to use a school district bus to take deaf students to Punderson State Park for an overnight leadership conference. All costs will be paid for by Community Solutions.
U Heard high school principal Tom Harrison say that Senate Bill 55 requires students to have three science courses to graduate instead of two. He said that after studying possible curriculum for a year, science department teachers have decided that what looked good on paper isn't what they want.
U Heard from Harrison that local firefighters will collect funds at the gate during Friday's homecoming football game with Newton Falls to be sent to the Red Cross.
U Heard from middle school principal Mary Rose Walker that next week is Parent Week in the district.
U Heard from Central Elementary principal Beverly Hoagland that the week of Oct. 1 is Ohio Reads Week, during which adults are matched with children to improve students' reading skills.
U Heard that fourth-grade proficiency reading tests are scheduled for Oct. 1-5.

U Approved pay increases Monday for all department heads and the council clerk.
U The police chief, the police captain, fire chief, finance director, service director and council clerk get the raises.
U Under the legislation, the finance director and service director get the largest raises to bring their salaries closer to those of the other administrators.
U Fran Moyer, finance director, gets a $5,245 raise and Paul Makosky, service director, a $2,968 increase.
