INTER-COUNTY LEAGUE South Range is 4-0; Mathews rallies to win



Lowellville nipped McDonald, 18-14.
MINERAL RIDGE -- Brad Johnson rushed 10 times for 61 yards and two touchdowns Friday as the South Range High football team blanked Mineral Ridge 44-0 in Inter-County League action.
Jeff Johnston added 12 carries for 55 yards and a 2-yard touchdown for the Raiders (4-0, 1-0).
South Range also got touchdown runs from Jim Saunders (5 yards), Ryan Maxwell (52) and Jed Chismar (16).
The South Range defense recorded 11 sacks and blocked a punt.
The Rams are 0-4, 0-1.
Lowellville 18, McDonald 14: LOWELLVILLE -- The Rockets' Mike Palumbo returned a Jason Joynes pass 54 yards to set up his 7-yard touchdown run .
Palumbo was 4-of-7 for 72 yards and a touchdown and carried 19 times for 86 yards for the Rockets (3-1, 1-0). Andy Peterson had 15 carries for 101 yards and a touchdown in the victory.
Running back Jeff Ashton led McDonald (1-3, 0-1) with 12 carries for 64 yards and Joynes was 9-for-15 for 147 yards and two touchdowns. Tyler Stanley caught six passes for 73 yards and two touchdowns in the loss.
Springfield 47, Jackson-Milton 7: NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Dan Zitkovic rushed for 163 yards on 21 carries, which included TD runs of 13, 20, 8 and 7 yards.
In recoring its first win in four outings, the Tigers chalked up 255 yards on 41 rushes and they were 4-of-6 passing for 104.
Ryan Jones caught three of those passes (101 yards) from quarterback Pat Birch. Two of them were 49- and 40-yard TDs.
Lee Keck scored on an 8-yard run for the Bluejays in the first quarter. He carried the ball 15 times for 44 yards.
Mathews 37, Western Reserve 34: VIENNA -- The Blue Devils drove inside the Mathews' 20-yard line twice in the last six minutes but could not score as the Mustangs rallied from a nine-point fourth quarter deficit.
With 6:12 remaining in the game, Mathews' Adam Hughes turned a 10-yard quick hitter from quarterback Marc Burcham into a 90-yard score to take the lead for good.
The Mustangs (2-2, 1-0) held Western Reserve on downs and Hughes late recovered a fumble at the 18-yard line with less than two minutes remaining.
Hughes carried 10 times for 41 yards and two touchdowns and caught five passes for 165 yards and a touchdown.
Burcham hit 10-of-21 for 248 and three touchdowns, adding 35 yards on 13 carries.
Cliff James paced the Blue Devils (1-3, 0-1) with 15 carries for 135 yards and two touchdowns.
