CAMPBELL -- Running back Ed McElroy rushed for two touchdowns while quarterback Juan Serrano threw for one and scored another Friday as the Chaney High football team defeated Campbell, 42-7.
"We really needed a game to assert ourselves offensively," Chaney coach Ron Berdis said. "Tonight was that night. Our backs ran well and we controlled the line, so I was very pleased with our performance."
After a scoreless first period, the Cowboys (3-1) scored three times before halftime for a 21-0 lead.
Serrano ran 6 yards for the initial touchdown and McElroy added a 47-yard run. Serrano then hit Kielen Dykes for a 10-yard scoring aerial with 20 seconds remaining before the break.
"Ed McElroy and Juan Serrano have been very special for us the first four weeks of the season," Berdis said.
Yardage: The Red Devils (2-2) managed just 47 yards of total offense in the first half, 35 coming on a Mohamed Awad-to-Albert Holland pass.
While the Cowboys rolled up 233 yards of offense in the first half, the Chaney defense permitted the Devils just three plays on their side of the 50.
"They're an excellent ball club," Campbell coach John Ryan said. "They are a well-coached team with great athletes and they got the better of us tonight."
The Cowboys increased the lead to 30-0 after three periods.
Chaney scored when Campbell snapped the ball over punter Rick Quinn's head midway through the third period.
Chris Eskew scored on a 30-yard scamper with 3:28 remaining in the session.
McElroy added his second touchdown with 5:57 remaining in the game to make it 36-0, but the Red Devils avoided a shutout when Awad scored from 20 yards out.
The final score came with 48 seconds to go when Chaney's Justin Hood scored from 2 yards out.
Stats: McElroy led all rushers with 151 yards on 22 carries. The Cowboys rolled up 347 yards on 53 carries as a team.
Serrano was 5-for-7 passing for 57 yards.
Campbell connected on six of 17 aerials for 114 yards.
The Chaney defense limited the Red Devils to 44 rushing yards on 22 carries.
Mike Harden, the leading rusher for Campbell, had three runs for 21 yards.
