Prayer vigil
YOUNGSTOWN -- A prayer vigil will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Eucharistic Chapel at St. Columba Cathedral before the execution at 10 a.m. of John Byrd.
Byrd was sentenced to death by the state of Ohio after being convicted of killing Monte Tewksbury during a 1983 robbery in Cincinnati. The prayer vigil will be for Byrd, Tewksbury, their families and all victims of violence.
The vigil is sponsored by the Office of Pro-Life Activities of the Catholic Diocese. The office will present Catholic teachings on the death penalty from 9 to 9:20 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel.
Shenango Lake Day
SHENANGO LAKE -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Shenango Lake will have the annual Shenango Lake Day on Sept. 29.
During Shenango Lake Day, volunteers work on projects to beautify the park.
These projects include graveling of trails, painting and staining of picnic shelters, planting vegetation, adding wood chips to playgrounds, replacing damaged or worn signs, upgrading or refurbishing campsites and litter pickup.
Volunteers from Shenango Lake Day 2000 put in a total of 2,150 hours of service for the park.
"Without the hard work and dedication of volunteers, many things that need to be done in the park would not get done," corps officials said.
