CHARACTERISTICS Glomerulonephritis

Affects the glomeruli, microscopic structures in the kidneys.Inflammation occurs within the kidney(s).Several causes, some associated with other diseases or, in rare cases, medications. Usually, however, causes(s) remain unknown.Swelling usually occurs.Urine contains increased red blood cells or protein and is often discolored.Sometimes, no symptoms are present.Treatment depends on the cause(s).If there's a family history of the disease, doctor can assess for risk factors and recommend specific screening or diagnostic tests.
