CAMPBELL -- Most of the offices here will be filled automatically as only two positions, council president and 1st Ward councilman, have any competition.
The 2nd Ward Councilman Bryan K. Tedesco, 3rd Ward Councilman Joseph G. Mazzocca, 4th Ward Councilman Lewis F. Jackson Jr. and Law Director Brian J. Macala are running unopposed.
Joseph M. Fusillo is challenging incumbent Robert P. Yankle for council president. Yankle has served as president since July 2000; before that, he was a 4th Ward councilman. Overall he has spent 12 years on council.
He said he'd like to maintain a working relationship with council and Mayor John Dill.
What was questioned: Yankle said Fusillo shouldn't have been allowed on the ballot, believing Fusillo didn't meet the city's residency requirement.
The city requires that candidates live there at least two years before running for office.
A city occupancy permit in Fusillo's name shows he and his wife moved to town in January 1997.
In an Oct. 7 article, Fusillo told The Vindicator that he wasn't going to sling mud at his competitor over the mishap.
In the race for 1st Ward council, Steve Sferra is challenging incumbent Jerry Rudiak, who has served on council for nine years. Rudiak said he wants to clean up and revitalize the ward and bring in a supermarket for residents.
Sferra also wants to see a grocery store in town and wants to make street repairs a priority.
