AFSCME talks
WARREN -- Striking Trumbull County Child Support Enforcement Agency workers returned to picket lines for the second day this morning. Talks between their union, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3808, and the Trumbull County commissioners broke down Sunday. Unresolved issues include the proposed elimination of workers' hourlong paid lunch break and a request for employees to pay a portion of health insurance costs. No further talks are scheduled.
McDonald's robbed
WARREN -- Police are investigating an aggravated robbery at McDonald's, 2487 Parkman Road N.W. A female, armed with a handgun, crawled through the restaurant's drive-through window around 1 a.m. today and robbed employees, reports said. The woman fled after receiving an undisclosed amount of cash. No injuries were reported.
Meeting canceled
NILES -- A special school board meeting scheduled for Thursday has been canceled.
Volleyball in Girard
GIRARD -- City Recreation Director Mark Zuppo has scheduled a meeting for 6:30 p.m. Monday in the Girard City Gym for men and women interested in joining a volleyball league. Participants must be city residents or Girard High School graduates.
Walking at gym
GIRARD -- The city's gym will be open for walking from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Monday through Friday beginning Nov. 12. The gym is in the city building, 100 W. Main St.
Seeking nurses
NILES -- The board of education is seeking applications for substitute school nurses. Both registered nurses and licensed practical nurses who have a current Ohio license are eligible. Applications may be submitted at the nurse's office at the board of education building, 100 West St.
Robbery reported
YOUNGSTOWN -- An 18-year-old Halls Heights Avenue resident told police he was robbed of $760 Monday when he went to a prearranged meeting to buy stereo equipment from a man he knew. When he drove to the location on North Glenellen Avenue near Mahoning Avenue at 8 p.m., the victim said, the man he thought would sell him the equipment grabbed him, drew a handgun, fired it once into the air, and pushed it into the victim's chest before fleeing with the cash taken from the victim's pocket.
Escapee arrested
YOUNGSTOWN -- An escapee from the Federal Correctional Institute in Elkton was arrested Monday by members of the Mahoning Valley Violent Crimes Task Force. Terrell Martin, 20, of Youngstown was found hiding inside 708 Broadway, according to the FBI. Martin, who was imprisoned on a drug conviction, escaped from Elkton on Oct. 9.
Embezzling charge
SEBRING -- An Alliance man has been charged with embezzling $4,000 from United Steelworkers of America Local 1013-L in Sebring. The U.S. attorney's office in Cleveland said William A. Fast, 43, of Western Avenue, took the money during a period from June 1997 to March 1998 while he was treasurer of the local.
Dog on patrol
ERIE, Pa. (AP) -- A 3-year-old German shepherd started her job as a bomb sniffer Monday at the Erie International Airport. The dog, named Sirra, was brought in to search vehicles and patrol the terminal as airport officials tighten security in response to the Sept. 11 attacks.
T-shirts for sale
SALEM -- The Salem Memorial building is selling "Operation: Enduring Freedom" T-shirts at the building on 785 E. State St. The cost is $10 per shirt. Proceeds will go for the purchase of material and equipment for the building.
Officer resigns
ERIE, Pa. (AP) -- An Erie police officer who was found guilty of speeding in a crash that left a woman comatose has resigned, department officials said Monday. Officer Greg DiLoreto, 31, gave Deputy Chief Steve Kovacs a resignation letter. On Sept. 24, DiLoreto was found guilty of driving at an unsafe speed when his cruiser collided with a pickup truck driven by Jennifer George, 26, a single mother of two. Police said the officer was responding to a fight call and that George was attempting to make a left turn when the accident occurred April 13. George remains in a coma at a rehabilitation center.
