Tringhese, Willisnamed 2nd team
COLUMBUS -- Hubbard High School senior defender Matt Tringhese and Cardinal Mooney freshman striker Ken "Kiki" Willis made second-team All-State in soccer, as chosen by the Ohio Scholastic Coaches Association.
Tringhese was picked in Division II while Willis made it in Div. III.
In Div. I, Austintown Fitch midfielder Sam Camens was chosen to the third team.
Niles senior Eric Faith and Ursuline senior Brian Rabel were selected third team all state in Div. II.
Making the third team in Div. III were Warren JFK senior Shawn Bean, Badger senior Josh Upshire and Mooney junior midfielder Alex Simon.
Candace Bateshelping Ohio U.
CLEVELAND -- Candace Bates, former Poland High basketball star, is off to a strong sophomore season with the Ohio University women's basketball team.
Through three games, Bates is the Bobcats' second-leading scorer with a 15.3-point average behind Cathy Szall (19.3), and ranks No. 9 in the Mid-American Conference while Szall is No. 2. The MAC leader is Stephanie Smiley of Eastern Michigan with 21.0.
Bates also is tied for No. 9 in the MAC in free throws with 80.0 percent on 16-for-20, and tied for No. 12 in 3-point goals made with 3-for-4 for 1.33 per game.
Bates also is shooting 46.4 percent from the field on 13-for-28.
She had a season-high 21 points in OU's only win, a 98-91 overtime decision over East Carolina that improved the Bobcats to 1-2.
Davis of Polandsigns with E. Mich.
YPSILANTI, Mich. -- Shane Davis, a senior baseball standout at Poland High, has signed a national letter of intent to attend Eastern Michigan University and continue his baseball career with the Hurons.
The announcement was made by Roger Coryell, the EMU baseball coach.
Davis (5-10, 185) is a catcher for Poland and batted .458 last season as a junior with 28 runs batted in 23 games. He was selected to the All-Metro Athletic Conference and All-NEO District first teams.
Davis also sparkled in the Class B League last summer, ranking No. 1 in runs scored (32) and No. 2 in batting (.451).
Title games on TV
AKRON -- The six Ohio high school football championship playoff games will be shown on Time Warner Cable Ohio News Network tonight and Saturday.
The Div. III game will be aired today at 11 a.m., followed by the Div V game at 3:30 p.m. and the Div II game at 8 p.m.
The Div. IV game will be aired Saturday at 11 a.m., followed by the Div. VI game at 3:30 p.m. and the Div. I game at 8 p.m.

Hlinka threatensto sue Penguins
PITTSBURGH -- Ivan Hlinka, fired as the Pittsburgh Penguins' coach following an 0-4 start, has hired two lawyers and is threatening to sue the team for breach of contract.
Hlinka claims the Penguins have not paid him the $800,000 he is owed on a three-year contract that runs through June 30, 2003.

Tanaka leadsin PGA qualifier
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Hidemichi Tanaka of Japan shot an 8-under 64 to take a one-stroke lead after the second round of the PGA Tour qualifying tournament, while 17-year-old Ty Tryon moved up 26 places and was in good shape to get his card.
Tryon's 69 at Bear Lakes Country Club put him in a tie for 33rd. The high school junior from Orlando is trying to become the youngest player to earn his PGA Tour card through Q-school.
Bids submittedfor Red Sox
BOSTON -- Prospective owners of the Boston Red Sox submitted bids for controlling interest in the team with no indication of when or how the winner will be selected.
The Jean R. Yawkey Trust is selling its 53 percent stake of the team, which owns Fenway Park and 80 percent of the New England Sports Network.
Among those confirming bids were South Boston land developer Frank McCourt, Cablevision Systems Corp. chairman Charles Dolan and New England Sports Ventures, a group led by former San Diego Padres owner Tom Werner.
Owens Awardwinners named
NEW YORK -- Pole vaulter Stacy Dragila and shot putter John Godina won the Jesse Owens Award for 2001 as the nation's outstanding track and field athletes.
Dragila won the gold medal in the Sydney Olympics last year and holds two straight world championship titles.
