LISBON -- Donations will cover the cost of a new village square memorial for veterans. Mike Seidner of the Columbiana County Veteran's Service Commission told village council on Monday the local American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars had been consulted about replacing the monument, which had been destroyed by vandals earlier in the year.
More than $7,500 has been raised for the project, Seidner said, with donations ranging from $5 to $5,000.
He said a new monument, designed by Richardson Monuments of Lisbon, will be erected with council's permission.
Because the village is soon to begin the next phase of a revitalization project, Seidner asked if some changes could be incorporated for the monument site.
He asked if the new monument could be placed to the rear of the existing cannon on the square and be placed facing the corner of Lincoln Way and North Market Street. Seidner also asked if two granite benches and a new flagpole could be incorporated at the site.
Mayor Jeff Snyder said the intent was for a new flagpole to be installed, and he agreed to turn over the suggestions to the project manager for inclusion in the design for the village square. Snyder said he was most appreciative of the donations, which will enable the monument to be replaced.
Project: In a related matter, council is expected to take action at its next meeting for Phase II of the revitalization project. According to Snyder, the project will include installation of sidewalks, curbing and decorative lights from Jefferson Street east to the Lepper Library, and west from Beaver Street to the American Legion.
Also planned for upgrading is the village square with a new fountain, gazebo and brick sidewalks, in addition to the new monument. Landscaping will also be done.
Snyder said council will only meet once during December because of the holidays, with the meeting slated for Dec. 17.
