GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL Salem gains consolation win




Sophomore Alyson Cotter sparked the Quakers to a 50-41 in the Lady Tigers Tip-Off Basketball Classic.
MARIETTA -- Sophomore Alyson Cotter registered career highs of 22 points and eight rebounds as the Salem High girls basketball team defeated Marietta, 50-41, Saturday in the consolation game of the Lady Tigers Tip-Off Basketball Classic .
Cotter and teammate Abby Markovich were named to the all-tournament team.
Cotter had 40 points and 15 rebounds for the tourney, while Markovich had 29 points, including 12 Saturday.
Salem (1-1) led 50-29 with less than four minutes to play.
Northern (N.C.) 63, Salem 56: In Friday's game, Salem, after falling behind 51-43 late in the third, rallied to close the gap to 53-50 with 7:01 left. But Northern outscored the Quakers 10-6 the rest of the way.
Markovich had 19 points to eclipse her career best of 10 set last year against Howland.
Junior Tiffanie Heestand's 13 points also were a career high, surpassing her 12 against Jefferson Area last year. Her eight rebounds were also a career high.
Cotter added 18 points for the Quakers.
Canfield 62, Rayen 23: CANFIELD -- Rayen struggled with Canfield's press as the Cardinals opened up a 16-0 first quarter lead en route to a season-opening win.
Canfield forced 34 turnovers and had a 34-5 lead at the break. Erin Martin had 16 points for the Cardinals, and Kelly Williams added 14 points.
Cherrell Triplett led Rayen (0-1) with 6 points.
Boardman 59, Struthers 33: STRUTHERS -- Amber Bland, Brittany Durkin and Bridget Beachy scored 23, 15 and 14 points, respectively, for the Spartans.
Laura Berry scored 12 points for the Wildcats.
Boardman led just 11-7 after one quarter but used a 17-11 spurt in the next eight minutes to take a 28-18 lead at the break.
Mooney 70, Wilson 11: YOUNGSTOWN -- Junior Aieshya Dixon collected 18 points and 16 rebounds for the Cardinals who led 19-2 after one quarter and 39-4 at the break.
Lori Patrone tacked on 10 points, seven assists and five steals, while Megan Maloney had nine points and five assists.
Fitch 87, Chaney 24: AUSTINTOWN -- Senior forward Kim Buhro and senior guard Megan Geidner led four players in double figures as the Falcons opened a 26-9 lead after one quarter in their season opener.
Buhro had 19 points, 10 rebounds, seven steals and six assists for Fitch, while Geidner added 19 points, five rebounds and seven assists.
Senior guard Cassie Williams and junior forward Katie McDermott had 15 points apiece with McDermott getting five rebounds and seven steals.
Sumya McElroy's seven points led Chaney.
Ursuline 71, Columbiana 22: YOUNGSTOWN -- Senior Mahogani Graves had 18 points on eight field goals and two free throws, and sophomore Courtney Davidson popped in seven fielders for 16 points.
Graves and sophomore Lindsay Benton contributed nine rebounds apiece as the Irish controlled the boards, 41-19.
For the Clippers, Kara Hardenbrook scored eight points, while Stevie Goist pulled down nine rebounds.
