The board of education on Tuesday:
Accepted the Ohio Edison Science and Robotics Grant from Greg Petrosky, district manager of Ohio Edison/First Energy. The $500 grant will be used by the robotics team for supplies to design, program and build a robot for competition at regional and national competitions of the FIRST -- For Inspiration and Recognition in Science and Technology -- organization. The grant application was written by high school principal Joseph Jeswald and sponsor William Shuttleworth. Only two other schools in this area are involved in the FIRST program, Chaney and Warren Harding.
Approved the resignation of Andrew Saxon from his supplemental postion of junior high track coach.
Superintendent Joseph Shoaf commended students Amanda Archer and Lindsey Boomhower for designing the Co-Curricular Handbook of Girard High and Junior High Schools.
Granted permission to John Spano, head varsity track coach, to run a volunteer varsity boys and girls indoor track season during January and February. This will include practices and some indoor track meets.
Heard a brief summary of a program to provide laptop computers to all students beginning with the 2002 senior class. The program would cost $200 per computer and entail using a sponsoring vendor's servers. He did not reveal the vendor name.
