Flu shot clinic
LISBON -- The Columbiana County Health Department is offering flu shots for Columbiana County residents only from 9 a.m. to noon Friday at the health department, 7360 state Route 45. The vaccine is also restricted to people age 65 and older and those who have a chronic illness or compromised immune system. There is no charge for the vaccine, but donations are welcome. School bus accident
LEETONIA -- Several Leetonia elementary school children were injured when their school bus went into a ditch. The accident occurred about 4:20 p.m. Tuesday, the Lisbon post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said. The bus was being driven west on Longs Crossing Road in Salem Township by Matthias Hoefler, 60, of Salem, when he lost control of the vehicle and it struck a culvert, the patrol said. Six children ages 7 to 11 were on the bus. A girl was treated at Salem Community Hospital. Other youngsters reported bruises and scrapes. Hoefler was cited for failure to control, a patrol spokeswoman said.
Safety concerns
SALEM -- City administration officials will see what can be done to improve pedestrian safety at the busy downtown intersection of East State Street and Lincoln Avenue. Concerned residents came to city council's Tuesday meeting and asked officials to look into the matter. Their concern was sparked by a Nov. 5 accident in which George W.S. Hays, the public library director, was struck by a vehicle while Hays was crossing the intersection. He was hospitalized for several days. Pedestrian-vehicle accidents at the intersection are rare, service Director Joe Julian said today.
Garbage collection
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- City hall will be closed Thursday and Friday for the Thanksgiving holiday. However, garbage collection in the city of New Castle will continue on its normal schedule this week.
Leak closes highway
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- A leaking fuel tank caused a section of U.S. Route 208 to close for about four hours Tuesday. New Wilmington Police Chief Richard Hanna said a police officer directing school traffic noticed the diesel fuel leaking from a tractor trailer traveling east on Route 208. The truck, owned by Union Drilling Inc. of Buckhannon, W.Va., was stopped near the borough post office and police discovered a leak from an 800-gallon tank on the trailer. The fuel is used to power generators at natural gas wells in the area. Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection spokesman Freda Tarbell said a fitting on the tank broke, letting out about 175 gallons of diesel. Firefighters contained most of the fuel with absorbent pads and floor drying material, she said. Pennsylvania Department of Transportation officials also spread sand on the road to keep it from getting slick, Tarbell said. Police closed traffic at 3:45 p.m. from Pearson Street to the intersection of Pa. Routes 956 and 158, Hanna said. The spill was cleared up by about 8:30 p.m.
3 charged in break-in
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Police have arrested three men accused of breaking into a Shenango Street home and threatening a resident there Nov. 7.
Ricky Thompson, 25, of West Jamestown Road, Bryon Kerr, 30, of Kinsman Road and Richard Woods, 30, of Atlantic, Pa., were all picked up on warrants Tuesday charging them with simple assault, burglary, making terroristic threats, criminal mischief, criminal trespass and disorderly conduct.
All were arraigned before District Justice William Fagley and all were in Mercer County Jail this morning with bond set at $25,000 each.
Police said charges are pending against a fourth person in the case.
Trespassers hit woman
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A woman was hit over the head with a chair when she interrupted two suspected burglars. Police said the 40-year-old woman heard noises in the apartment above her on the 600 block of East Long Avenue. When she went to investigate, she saw two black men wearing blue jackets and blue jeans coming down the hall from the upstairs apartment. One of the men grabbed a chair that was in the hall and hit her over the head, police said. Both men ran off and it doesn't appear anything was taken from the upstairs apartment, which was vacant, they said. Police said the upstairs apartment door was forced open. Police did not specify if the woman was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Car stereo stolen
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Someone took a car stereo, about 32 compact discs and $2 in quarters from an unlocked car parked on the 900 block of Temple Avenue. Police said the items were taken between 2 p.m. Monday and 2 p.m. Tuesday.
