Misalignment gives the road a slight S curve.
MERCER, Pa. -- An engineering report from the company replacing the Oakland Avenue Viaduct in Sharon says misalignment of the bridge's steel frames won't affect its structural integrity.
Mark Miller, Mercer County bridge engineer, said his department and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation are looking at that report now and should complete their preliminary reviews this week.
The roadway will rest on the frames, and their misalignment gives the 300-foot span's road path a slight S shape. The problem is caused by a misalignment of the concrete pedestals upon which the structural steel rests, Miller said.
The steel frame should be straight, but it is out of alignment by as much as 3 inches at one point, he said.
Delay ordered: The county has ordered the contractor, Carmen Paliotta Contracting of Library, Pa., not to pour the concrete decking on the new bridge until the county is assured the bridge will be structurally sound, Miller said.
The company is being paid $3.6 million to replace the bridge, which spans the Shenango Valley Freeway.
The company is also asking for a 35-day extension on its contract because of a delay in the shipment of steel. The job was to be finished Nov. 30. The county is reviewing the request, Miller said.
