The city of Farrell will hold its annual holiday tree-lighting ceremony at 6 p.m. Nov. 28 at the intersection of Roemer Boulevard and Mercer Avenue near Farrell High School. A youth choir will provide the music and participants are invited to the municipal building lobby for refreshments following the program.
Gobble Wobble: The Shenango Conservancy is holding its 5K Gobble Wobble race at 9:30 a.m. Thanksgiving Day in Buhl Farm, Hermitage. It's the 14th annual event and is sponsored this year by Greenville Savings Bank. The cost to enter is $4 in advance or $5 on race day. A family of three or more can register for $12. To preregister, call Gary Lackey at (724) 342-6835 or Cindy Glass at (724) 588-6732 for an application. On-site registration will run from 8 to 9:10 a.m. at the Casino in Buhl Farm. Awards will be presented in 20 categories based on sex and age, and there will be special awards for father/daughter, mother/son teams as well.
Excellence: Applications for all the 2002 Governor's School of Excellence programs are now available, said state Rep. Frank LaGrotta of Ellwood City, D-10th. The programs are open to high school sophomores and juniors and offer an intense, five-week immersion program into a field of study. Programs include the arts, agricultural science, global entrepreneurship, health care, information technology, international studies, sciences and teaching. They are held at various colleges and universities throughout the state. Tuition, room and board, and classroom expenses are covered in the scholarship for the program. Applications are available in high school guidance offices and are due by Feb. 4.
