It may be home to the Magic Kingdom, but Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., is not immune from the rest of the world's troubles. Because of the slump in tourism after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, it has reduced operating hours of some attractions and made other cutbacks.
Some live stage shows are being cut on certain days and Epcot's World Showcase section will open an hour later, at noon. Most of the Future World section of Epcot will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., instead of 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., but a few attractions there will remain open until 9 p.m. The Galley restaurant at the Yacht and Beach Club resort has closed; three other restaurants there remain open.
Disney has asked several thousand employees at Walt Disney World parks, hotels and administrative offices to switch voluntarily to a four-day workweek, resulting in a 20 percent cut in wages. Even before Sept. 11, Disney World had laid off some employees because of a general economic downturn.
