Guns reported stolen
ELLSWORTH -- Among the items reported taken during a burglary sometime Thursday morning from a house in the 5100 block of Gault Road were seven handguns worth nearly $3,000 that had been locked in a bedroom cabinet. Deputy Donald E. Bova Jr. learned from the homeowner that entry was likely made through a dog door that leads into the house from the garage. Aside from the guns, the homeowner said two TVs and a computer printer had been stolen.
Renovating fire hall
CANFIELD -- Township trustees will hire an architect to create plans for renovation of the fire hall on Messerly Road and the construction of a township salt dome. Trustees Paul Moracco and William Weaver recently voted in favor of a resolution authorizing the hiring. Trustee Judy Bayus was opposed. It is hoped that the renovations provide more room for Cardinal Joint Fire District firefighters at the hall and that the salt dome reduces the township's road salt costs.
Missing golf carts
COITSVILLE -- Countryside Golf Course on Coitsville Road was missing seven gas-powered golf carts Wednesday, but three turned up nearby in bushes by a new mausoleum at St. John's Cemetery, Coitsville police said. Whoever took the carts cut through a heavy cable that secures them together, said Allan P. Morris, assistant police chief.
Campbell jail rated
CAMPBELL -- Campbell City Jail has met 100 percent of the state jail standards for the second consecutive year. The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction looks at about 14 standards for jails during their annual inspections. This year, inspections focused on jail security and prisoner discipline.
Heading for NYC
LIBERTY -- Two members of the township fire department were scheduled to leave for New York City this evening to deliver more than $7,000 to their counterparts there. The funds raised by International Association of Firefighters Local 2075 will be delivered by Jason DeLuca and Christopher Olson. The money is to help the families of firefighters who died as a result of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Recycling grants given
COLUMBUS -- The Ohio Department of Natural Resources has awarded recycling grants to Youngstown, Mahoning County, Columbiana County and the Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste districts. The grants support recycling collection, waste reduction activities, awareness campaigns and litter prevention programs. The grant totals are: $56,600 for Youngstown, $84,900 for Mahoning County, $84,900 for Columbiana County, and $162,725 for Geauga-Trumbull.
Man beaten, stabbed
YOUNGSTOWN -- Angel Cruz, 32, of Wilson Avenue told police that he had fallen asleep while watching television and awoke when someone entered his house about 2 a.m. today and beat him with a sledgehammer before stabbing him several times. Cruz said a neighbor who heard his screams took him to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where he was in stable condition this morning. Reports don't indicate a reason for the attack or a description of the suspect.
Workshop canceled
BOARDMAN -- A free workshop on landscaping "The Plant Phase" that was set for Saturday at Boardman Township Park has been canceled.
Facing drug charge
AUSTINTOWN -- Police arrested a Toledo woman early this morning at Perkin's restaurant on Interstate Boulevard after finding a suspected crack pipe in her purse. The woman, 35, who is known as "Go Go," was charged by police with possession of drug paraphernalia. Police went to Perkins after speaking with another Toledo woman, known as "Precious," who had been going from truck to truck in the parking lot of the Rebel Lounge on Seventy-Six Drive. Reports state that the woman told police that she and Go Go were, "working the lot." Police said Go Go gave them consent to search her purse at Perkins. The two women and a man they had been traveling with were warned to stay away from the area or they would be charged with criminal trespassing.
