LISBON -- Columbiana County Health Department will administer the last round of flu vaccine from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 2 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at the health department, 7360 state Route 45.
Health Commissioner Robert Morehead said the Ohio Department of Health supplies the vaccine and has restricted its use to Columbiana County residents who are 65 and older or who have a chronic illness or compromised immune system. Morehead said no additional shipments of flu vaccine are expected this year.
He noted that parking at the health department is limited, and people should avoid parking along the highway.
Arrests in truck theft
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- One man is being held in Mercer County Jail and a second is in Columbiana County Jail awaiting extradition in the theft of a pickup truck from a city convenience store Oct. 20.
Police said Mark J. Nichols, 21, of Shenango Boulevard, Farrell, was extradited from Ohio Wednesday on charges of robbery of a motor vehicle, theft and receiving stolen property. He was arraigned and remained in jail on $7,500 bond.
Meanwhile, police have issued a warrant for the arrest of Antoinne A. Holmes, 26, of Beechwood Avenue, Farrell, on the same charges. He remains in Columbiana County Jail awaiting extradition proceedings, police said.
The two are accused of stealing a pickup truck from outside a convenience store after the truck owner left it running when he entered the store.
Nichols and Holmes were caught later in Leetonia, Ohio, after failing to pay for gasoline at a service station there, police said.
Youngstown courthouse
WASHINGTON -- The U.S. House of Representatives voted 410-0 to name the new federal courthouse being built in Youngstown the Nathaniel R. Jones and Frank J. Battisti Federal Building and United States Courthouse in honor of the two federal judges born in Youngstown.
The legislation was proposed by U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr. of Poland, D-17th.
Judges Battisti and Jones were leaders in school desegregation efforts. The legislation needs approval by the U.S. Senate.
No deer hunting in park
BOARDMAN -- Hunting will not be permitted in Mill Creek Park this year because of a reduction in the park's deer population.
Mill Creek MetroParks board decided not to allow the hunt after a population count at the end of last year found about 100 deer in the woods. The deer population had been as high as 300.
Pa. maintenance official
MERCER, Pa. -- Scott K. Young, a 21-year veteran of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, has been named Mercer County maintenance manager. He succeeds Don Harpst, who retired in September.
Young, who lives in Erie County, began his career as a highway maintenance worker in 1980 and has held various positions, including numerous management positions in Erie County.
County OKs school plan
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The Lawrence County Planning Commission gave its nod to subdivision plans for the new city high school. School officials wanted to convert 15 separate lots into four as part of their plans to build a campus-style school.
The recommendation of the county planning commission will now go to the New Castle Planning Commission. James Gagliano, planning director, said the planning commission is an advisory board to the city commission.
School officials have said they would like to advertise for construction bids in late January and begin construction in the spring.
Girl Scouts' badges
SHARON, Pa. -- Some 230 Girl Scouts will spend three hours Saturday night at the F.H. Buhl Club earning their Women's Health badges.
Girls from across Mercer County and from as far away as Erie and Warren, Pa., will participate in the program of education, swimming and play, which begins at 8 p.m. after the Women's Health badge portion of the night. The girls will have free run of the gyms and racquetball courts for an all-night party.
