Columbiana baseball coach voted out by school board

COLUMBIANA -- Bruce Wolfe said he has no idea why he is no longer at the helm of the Columbiana High baseball program.
With member David Dale absent, the board of education voted 4-0 Wednesday not to renew Wolfe's supplemental coaching contract.
Wolfe said he had been working on the baseball field and making other preparations for the spring season. He said the board's action came as a surprise.
"This totally took me off guard," Wolfe said Thursday.
"I'm as surprised as anyone," he said. "No one came to me and said there was any problem."
Wolfe, who teaches high school math, is in his 16th year in the district and has been varsity baseball coach for 12 seasons.
During his coaching tenure, Clipper baseball teams won nine Tri-County League championships.
Board member Bill Greenawalt said he has two daughters, and has not had any personal dealings with Wolfe, but "people expressed to me that it's time for a change."
He said he voted with other board members because he "always wants to do what's best for the students."
