HUBBARD -- Township police have recovered a stolen piece of lifting equipment valued at about $8,000.
Detective Mike Begeot said today the equipment was recovered Wednesday from a business on Truck World Boulevard.
It is owned by United Rentals of Oakdale, Pa., near Pittsburgh.
The investigation continues, Begeot said.
Township, BFI servicesagree on waste pickup
HOWLAND -- An agreement has been reached between the township and BFI Waste Services of Youngstown to provide service for residents.
Full-service pickup has increased by $1 and will be $14 per month. This includes garbage, up to five bags of yard waste and one large appliance or piece of furniture each week.
Freon must be removed from appliances by a certified technician before pickup.
The senior citizen rate will remain at $10.80 per month, and a single can rate is still available for $8 per month.
Construction and demolition material, as well as carpeting, will not be picked up.
New rates are effective Jan. 1.
Board plans meeting
NILES -- Trumbull County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities will conduct its annual public forum on its 2002 plan at 6 p.m. Dec. 12 at the Fairhaven School, 420 Lincoln Way.
Township reports
SOUTHINGTON -- Zoning inspector Sam Lee told township trustees Wednesday that three homes were built in the township in October and five permits with a total property valuation of $674,300 were requested.
That brings the number of permits to 47 for the year so far. Total valuation is $2.64 million. The township has collected $1,771 in fees on the 47 permits.
Fire Chief Tom Strock reported a total of 32 runs in October -- 13 emergency medical service calls, eight auto accidents, two structure fires and nine service calls.
Strock said Arron Holman has finished his training and probation and trustees approved him as a permanent member of the fire department.
Remembering heroes
SHARON, Pa. -- Covenant Presbyterian Church, 263 E. State St., will have a prayer and honor service at 7 p.m. Sunday in remembrance of the New York City firefighters killed in the Sept. 11 attacks.
Firefighters from the region are invited to attend and are asked to wear dress blues or station uniforms.
The program will feature the honor guard of the 475th Quartermaster Corps of the Army Reserve, The Tiger Kittens and Men of Note, singing ensembles from Sharon High School, and several speakers and local clergymen.
The program was arranged by Lt. Paul McSherry of the Sharon Fire Department.
Turnpike meeting
COLUMBIANA -- The Ohio Turnpike Commission has set a public meeting for 7 p.m. Wednesday to gather input about proposed permit fee increases to take effect Jan. 1. The meeting will be at the Dutch Village Inn at state Routes 14 and 164.
Commission members will explain proposed scheduled permit fee increases for long combination vehicles, trailer combinations in excess of 90 feet, and overweight, overwidth and overheight vehicles.
Trade law resolution
WASHINGTON -- The House passed a resolution Wednesday written by U.S. Rep. Phil English of Erie, R-21st, that opposes any talk of weakening U.S. trade laws during the World Trade Organization conference in Qatar this week.
"As we begin a new round of global trade talks, we do not want to see a weakening of the anti-dumping and countervailing duty laws," English said.
The House resolution opposes negotiations on those laws during the conference.
English, chairman of the Congressional Steel Caucus and a member of the Ways and Means Trade Subcommittee, was to attend the conference, which opens Friday, but House leadership asked members to cancel their trips because important legislation will be considered while the conference is occurring.
More than 140 countries will be represented.
"We must send a loud message to our trading partners. We will not tolerate unfair trading practices," English said.
